Volkswagen took a while to wake up and create an adventurous Cross version for Saveiro. But it did a great job and left the compact pickup with an interesting style to face its main rival, the then Fiat Strada Adventure.
With a 1.6 engine, appliqués that refer to off-road and some mechanical peculiarities, the Volkswagen Saveiro Cross today is a used option for those who want a cooler pickup for the city, without losing its functionality.

1. Saveiro’s
trajectory The Volkswagen Saveiro was the first pickup truck derived from the German brand’s passenger car. It was launched in 1982, from the Gol and the BX Project, to compete in the market with the Fiat 147 Pick-up and the Ford Pampa. It used a 1.6-liter air-cooled engine.

The liquid-cooled set came in 1985. Two years later followed the restyling of the Gol family (which included Voyage and Parati), with Santana mirrors in 1988. It underwent a new update in 1991, gained electronic injection in 1996 and, in 1997, debuted the second generation called Bolinha.
The Saveiro was still restyled in 2000 and 2005. In the meantime, it had a TSI sports version, flex engine and special series. In 2006, a harbinger of what the Saveiro Cross would be was the launch of the Crossover configuration of the pickup.
In 2009, the third generation was launched based on the new Gol and using the Fox’s PQ24 platform and with single and extended cab options. The following year, Volkswagen launched the Cross option for Saveiro.

The German automaker’s pickup still had a face-lift in 2014. The same year that Volkswagen launched the double cab option, it debuted a 1.6 16V engine and started to offer stability controls and four-wheel disc brakes for the Saveiro line (including the Cross).
In 2016, for the first time, Saveiro began to have a different front than the Gol after another design update. The pickup is still in production with more than 1 million units sold in 44 years, but should be discontinued after the arrival of Tukan.
2. Trajectory of the Volkswagen Saveiro Cross
The Volkswagen Saveiro Cross appeared in 2010, a year after the arrival of the third generation of the pickup (known as G5), derived from the then new Gol launched in 2008. The adventurous option debuted with an extended cabin, one of the novelties of this phase of the pickup.

Initially equipped with the 1.6 8V EA 111 engine and a five-speed manual transmission, the Saveiro Cross received a panel with white lighting in 2012. In 2014, it followed the restyling applied to Volkswagen’s compact line.
The most important turning point came in 2014, already as a 2015 line, when Saveiro Cross adopted the 1.6 16V engine from the EA 211 family. In addition to the more modern engine, it gained stability control and four-wheel disc brakes.
Shortly after, Volkswagen launched the Saveiro double cab body, also available for the Cross. In 2016, the pickup received its last facelift, as did the rest of the range.
The Saveiro Cross’s trajectory ended in 2023, when Volkswagen discontinued the configuration. In its place, the Extreme emerged, which remains the most expensive option in the range to this day.
3. What changes in the Cross
version The Saveiro Cross is visually differentiated by adventurous styling elements. Dark plastic frames surround the front, rear and wheel arches, while round auxiliary headlights reinforce the look at the front.
The alloy wheels with 15-inch rims use mixed-use ATR tires. On the roof, longitudinal bars are integrated into the stylized saint of the version. The tailgate bears the sticker that identifies Saveiro’s Cross configuration.
4. Handling
The Saveiro Cross maintains the traditional firmer driving touch of Volkswagen models. The steering with hydraulic assistance is direct and conveys safety, while the body has good rigidity.

The suspensions prioritize comfort, especially at the rear, which uses a torsion axle with coil springs – a common solution in passenger cars, but which compromises load capacity. Despite the dated platform (PQ24), the pickup behaves well at higher speeds and maintains stability even with an empty bed.
The least favorable point is the driving position: the seats are narrow, have insufficient lumbar support and a short seat, which impairs comfort on long trips. The height adjustment of the steering wheel, of the seesaw type, also makes it difficult to find the ideal position.
5. Is the Saveiro Cross as robust as it looks?
Although many criticize the use of a torsion axle and coil springs at the rear – the main rival, the Fiat Strada, uses a rigid axle – the Saveiro Cross demonstrates resistance in everyday use. On off-road stretches, the version benefits from a clearance of more than 19 cm and an angle of attack of 20.1 degrees, which guarantees adequate performance for its “light adventurer” proposal.

The rear suspension, however, directly influences the load capacity of the Volkswagen Saveiro Cross, which is behind the old rival Strada Adventure. The German brand’s pickup offers 580 liters of volume in the bed and 607 kg of payload, against 680 liters and 650 kg of Fiat’s competitor.
For those who need greater capacity, the way is to resort to the single and extended cab versions. The Saveiro CE, for example, offers 734 liters and 668 kg, while the CS reaches 924 liters and 715 kg.
7. Saveiro Cross
performance With any of the 1.6 engines, the Saveiro Cross demonstrates bravery. The eight-valve EA 111 delivers quick responses and good power at low revs. With ethanol, there are 104 hp and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds; with gasoline, 101 hp and about 11 seconds. Consumption is 7.3 km/l in the city with ethanol and 10.7 km/l with gasoline.
The 1.6 16V MSI (120/110 hp) offers a much smoother ride and superior performance at medium revs, as well as acceleration under 10 seconds with vegetable fuel.
Urban consumption is similar to that of the previous engine: 7.2 km/l (ethanol) and 10.4 km/l (gasoline). In both cases, the MQ200 manual transmission stands out for its precise couplings and efficient staggering and well matched with the set.

The adventurous pickup offers ascent and descent controls, in addition to stability and traction. It also has a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, electrochromic rearview mirror and Isofix.
Air conditioning, electric trio, 15″ alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery on the seats and steering wheel and lighting in the bed were also standard. The multimedia center on a 6.5″ screen allows cell phone mirroring, has SD card and USB inputs, native GPS and Bluetooth connection.
