About 15 years ago, the Brazilian automotive market was experiencing the golden age of minivans. So much so that there was even room for off-road versions for these family models, such as the Fiat Idea Adventure.

Launched from the platform of the first generation of the Palio, the compact minivan stood out for its high driving position and use of interior space. A year later, Fiat Idea already won its Adventure version with the same recipe applied to other models of the Italian brand.

See now 10 facts for you to consider a Fiat Idea Adventure in your home garage.

1. Fiat Idea’s

trajectory Fiat Idea debuted in the domestic market in 2005 to compete directly with the Chevrolet Meriva. In addition, it was a more affordable alternative to medium minivans (such as Citroën Xsara Picasso, Chevrolet Zafira and Renault Scénic).

Initially, the minivan was negotiated with 1.4 Fire and 1.8 engines (the latter of GM origin). In 2006, Fiat launched the Idea Adventure with only the larger engine. In 2009, the compact minivan started to have the option of the Dualogic automated transmission – the target of much criticism to this day.

The minivan received restyling in 2010, the year in which it adopted new versions and the E.torQ 1.6 and 1.8 engines. It still underwent minor touches to the grille in 2014, but had production ended in Betim (MG) in 2016, within the process of renewing the manufacturer’s range.

In all, Fiat accounted for more than 250 thousand units of the Idea licensed in more than 10 years of production in Brazil.

2. Idea Adventure and the adventurous

cake recipe The minivan’s pseudo-off-road option was launched in September 2006. The Idea Adventure followed the same precepts of the “adventurer” package that Fiat already used in the Palio Weekend station-wagon, the Strada pickup and the Doblò multivan.

High clearance makes the Idea Adventure more practical in the pothole of Brazilian roads

In the case of the minivan, raised suspension with reinforced shock absorbers, which makes the Idea Adventure 3.5 cm taller than the others. At the same time, this version has a ground clearance of 18.5 cm, against 15 cm for the rest of the line.

It still has good angles: the attack angle of 29 degrees and the departure angle, of a generous 48 degrees. Completing the mechanical modifications are the sump guard and the mixed-use tires 205/70 R15, with exclusive alloy wheels.

In the external design, long-range headlights, bumper protectors, chrome grille, plastic moldings on the wheel arches, bars on the roof and that off-road badge: the spare tire fixed to the tailgate. In the cabin, compass and inclinometer, storage compartment on the trunk floor and different details in the finish.

Interestingly, despite being more expensive than the Idea, the Adventure option accounted for years for between 40% and 50% of total minivan sales in the country.

3. Had Locker

In 2008, Fiat’s Adventure family gained an interesting feature: the Locker. The equipment is an electromagnetic front differential locking mechanism, which acts under certain conditions.

Obviously, this does not accredit the Idea Adventure to off-road trails. But it can help to get out of a part of the terrain with less grip and/or when a tire at the front of the car is slipping.

The Locker works with the vehicle stationary or up to 20 km/h. By pressing the button on the dashboard, the system locks the force distributed at the front, that is, each front wheel receives the same torque.

4. Performance

The Fiat Idea Adventure started with the Family I engine of General Motors origin. The 1.8 8V generates 114 hp with ethanol and 112 hp with gasoline, and has interesting starts, but nothing phenomenal. 0 to 100 km/h is in the range of 12 seconds.

The best thing about this GM engine is the retakes. Not least because the maximum torque of 18,5/17,8 kgfm appears at 2.800 rpm. In any case, it is an engine with rough running and a lot of vibration, and whose consumption is poor.

The adoption of the 1.8 16V from the E.torQ family has slightly improved performance, with 0 to 100 km/h in around 11 seconds. This is thanks to the set of 132 hp of power with ethanol and 130 hp, with gasoline, and torque of 18,9/18,4 kgfm – respectively.

The ride, however, is also rough. But, in a way, much more comfortable and a little less drunk than the predecessor. The biggest advantage is that it works very well at medium revs and asks for fewer changes in the five-speed manual transmission.

5. Space and comfort

The driver finds the elevated driving position, typical of minivans, and the Idea Adventure offers height adjustments for both the seat and the steering wheel. Ergonomics is one of the positive points.

In the rear seat, we are talking about a compact. So, the passengers’ legroom and knees there is limited. The environment is more suitable for two adults and a child. The trunk receives a reasonable 380 liters.

The interior finish leaves something to be desired: excess plastic parts and inaccurate fittings. The acoustic insulation is also not impressive, being only average. The suspension, in turn, has interesting calibration and deals well with irregularities – the minivan does not usually “bounce” in holes.

Still, it’s not a car for more daring highway driving. Because it’s tall and relatively narrow, the minivan has that greater body inclination in curves and tends to dive more than ideal under sudden braking.

6. Watch out for the lid!

Remember that spare tire hanger on the trunk lid? Well, in addition to increasing the length of the vehicle by 30 cm (4.20 meters in total), the articulated tire support requires manual unlocking before opening the tailgate.

The tip is: in parking spaces or garages, leave at least an additional 50 cm of margin behind the vehicle to be able to fully open the luggage compartment.
