BMW has confirmed the end of sales of the iX electric SUV in the United States market. Launched in 2022 as the Bavarian brand’s flagship technology, the model leaves the North American catalog after four years on the market, marking the manufacturer’s transition to the Neue Klasse dedicated architecture.

The decision reflects BMW’s strategy to replace models based on the flexible CLAR platform — shared between combustion and electric vehicles — with an exclusive base for battery propulsion. The successor to the iX will use the sixth generation of the eDrive system, which provides gains in energy efficiency and charge density compared to the current set. In the top-of-the-line M60 version, the utility delivers 619 hp.

Although it fulfilled the role of image vehicle by introducing the iDrive 8 operating system and a new aesthetic language, the iX recorded a downward trajectory in registrations. The model reached its commercial peak in the US in 2023, with 17,301 units licensed. In the subsequent period, the volume fell to 15,383 in 2024 and closed the year 2025 with 12,587 copies sold.

In the first quarter of 2026, the retraction became more acute. With only 1,788 units sold between January and March, the SUV registered a drop of 50.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. Market analysts indicate that the announcement of the Neue Klasse platform generated a damming of demand, with consumers choosing to wait for the brand’s complete technological renewal, scheduled for the coming months.

Despite the withdrawal from the North American market, iX production remains active at the Dingolfing plant in Germany to meet demand in regions of Europe and Asia. BMW has not set a deadline for the global discontinuation of the utility, but the expectation is that the electric portfolio will be fully renewed by the end of 2027. The closure of operations in the U.S. serves as the first step in the automaker’s transition timeline to its second generation of modern electric vehicles.
