VW Tera 8 gears: understand the advantages of more speeds

Eight-speed Aisin gearbox arrives in the Comfort and High versions in October; in the T-Cross, the same gearbox yielded up to 7% savings

The VW Tera 2027 was announced during Rock in Rio with an update that, incredible as it may seem, was bigger than the addition of the 200 TSI engine to the top-of-the-line variants: it was its set partner, an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The novelty that has not yet had its prices published implies a series of driving advantages, not least because it is this extra gear that tends to change the behavior of the SUV in daily use.

The new set equips the Comfort and High versions. The engine is the same 1.0 turbo three-cylinder of the EA211 family produced in São Carlos (SP), but in the 200 TSI calibration, with 128 hp and 20,4 kgf.m — against 116 hp and 16,8 kgf.m of the 170 TSI, which is now exclusive to the Tera TSI, with manual transmission. The Tera MPI continues with the 1.0 aspirated 84 hp.

The gearbox is the Aisin AQ300, the same one that Volkswagen already uses in the Taos and which debuted in the T-Cross 2027.

More gears mean a wider range of ratios

Each gear is a gear ratio that multiplies the engine’s torque before it reaches the wheels. Short gear delivers more power and uses more fuel; long gear does the opposite. The designer’s job is to accommodate both needs — starting with a full car and running at 110 km/h at the lowest possible speed — within the number of gears available.

With six ratios, this account forces you to choose. Either the gearbox has wide steps between gears, and the engine drops a lot of speed with each change, or the range between the first and last becomes narrow, and the car loses in drag or road consumption.

With eight ratios, you can have both: first shorter to exit the traffic light, eighth longer for cruising and smaller steps between them. In practice, this means an engine that spends more time near the rev range in which it consumes less and yields better, less noticeable shifts and less rev — and less noise — at constant speed.

The gain is greater precisely in engines such as the 1.0 turbo three-cylinder, which concentrate torque in a narrow rotation window. The more precise the choice of gear, the longer the engine stays within this window.

In the T-Cross, the same gearbox yielded up to 7% savings

Volkswagen has not yet released consumption or performance data for the Tera with the new gearbox. What is concrete are the numbers of the T-Cross 2027, which received the same combination of engine and transmission.

Taking the Sense version as a reference, the manufacturer reported a reduction in urban consumption of up to 7% with gasoline and 5% with ethanol, in addition to a drop in the energy efficiency index from 1.64 MJ/km to 1.56 MJ/km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h also improved: 10 seconds with ethanol and 10.4 seconds with gasoline, against 10.4 and 10.9 seconds for the six-speed set.

They are numbers from another car, with their own weight, aerodynamics and final ratio. They serve as an order of magnitude of what the box delivers, not as a promise to the Tera.

More gears don’t always result in a better

car The bill has a limit. Each additional ratio adds gears, clutches, and hydraulic controls — that is, weight, complexity, and cost. After a certain point, the efficiency gain of one more gear is small compared to what it charges in internal friction and parts to maintain.

Calibration also weighs

A gearbox with many ratios needs a well-resolved shifting logic; when it doesn’t have it, it is indecisive on climbs and in traffic, going up and down gears all the time. That’s why manufacturers that prioritize urban consumption continue to bet on CVTs, which eliminate steps and keep the engine at the ideal revving, at the cost of a driving feeling that part of the public doesn’t like.

There is also a detail that shows that Volkswagen itself does not treat the gearbox as a universal solution: the Nivus, which uses exactly the same 200 TSI engine, continues with the six-speed transmission.

VW did not disclose prices or consumption of the Tera 2027

The 2027 line hits stores in October, but Volkswagen did not inform prices. Today, the Comfort costs R$ 133.190 and the High, R$ 146.190, still with the set of 116 hp and six gears. The list of equipment for the new line was also not detailed.

Meanwhile, the account that interests the buyer remains open: how much will Volkswagen charge for the two more gears and the 12 hp and how much of the promised savings is left after the price is announced?
