Fiat’s entry into the compact SUV segment took time, but it came at a strategic moment. With the Pulse and then the Fastback, the brand started to occupy space in a category that grows year after year and represents 1/3 of sales.

The Fiat Pulse, in particular, competes for the base of compact crossovers with a cost-benefit proposal. It is the so-called entry-level SUV segment or even SUVinhos, which has been gaining – and will gain – more and more rivals.

1. Pulse was Fiat’s first small SUV

Compact SUV competes in the fastest growing segment in the Brazilian market

The Fiat Pulse was born as Project 363, which punctuated the brand’s debut in the SUV segment developed specifically for Brazil. Although Fiat had already offered the Freemont in the past, it was a mid-size model and Dodge project.

Therefore, the Pulse is considered the “first genuinely Fiat SUV” produced in the country. Made at the Stellantis Automotive Plant in Betim (MG), it uses the MLA platform, derived from the Argo, with structural reinforcements and suspension adjustments.

In addition to the aspirated 1.3 Firefly engine, it was responsible for debuting the 1.0 turbo – Stellantis’ first turbocharged three-cylinder in South America – later applied in Fastback, Strada, Peugeot 208 and 2008 and Citroën C3 and Aircross.

Over the years it has won special series and a genuinely sporty version. In 2024, the Pulse was Fiat’s first flex hybrid in the world. Last year, it was restyled.

2. Name chosen by the public

The launch of the Fiat Pulse took place in October 2021, accompanied by an unprecedented action: the name of the car was chosen by popular vote on the brand’s social networks.

According to the Italian manufacturer, more than 380 thousand people participated in the poll. The name “Pulse” won with 65% of the vote. But let’s agree that the other options didn’t cheer up much: “Domo” and “Tuo”.

3. Disputed market

The Pulse was the car that kind of inaugurated this category of entry-level SUVs. They are those small crossovers, derived from a hatch and with lower prices compared to other compact SUVs.

After him, came Renault Kardian and Volkswagen Tera. More recently, Chevrolet launched the Sonic. And still in 2026 we will have the launches of Hyundai Bayon and Jeep Avenger.

4. Pulse 1.3 Performance

The Fiat Pulse with a naturally aspirated 1.3 Firefly engine delivers performance consistent with its proposal. With 107 hp (ethanol) and 98 hp (gasoline), the SUV offers good agility in urban use and moderate consumption.

The set responds well when starting and maintains predictable behavior, even with the virtual seven-speed CVT transmission. By the way, the interplay between the 1.3 and the continuously variable gearbox provides comfort and a certain agility in performance.

On the road, resumptions require attention: the torque of 13,7 kgfm (ethanol and 13,2 kgfm (gasoline) appears more vigorously only above 4,000 rpm.

Check the performance data (factory data) and consumption data (PBEV/Inmetro) of the SUV with aspirated mechanical assembly.

Fiat Pulse 1.3 MT

  • 0 to 100 km/h: 11.7 s (e) / 12.2 s (g)
  • Consumption in the city: 9.1 km/l (e) / 12.6 km/l (g)
  • Consumption on the road: 10.1 km/l (e) / 14.7 km/l (g)

Fiat Pulse 1.3 CVT

  • 0 to 100 km/h: 11.4s (e) / 12.2s (g)
  • Consumption in the city: 9.2 km/l (e) / 12.9 km/l (g)
  • Consumption on the road: 10.4 km/l (e) / 14.3 km/l (g)

5. Pulse turbo performance

With the 1.0 turbo engine from the GSE line, the Fiat Pulse is among the most powerful compact SUVs in the entry-level category. There are 130 hp (ethanol) and 125 hp (gasoline), with torque of 20,4 kgfm already at 1,700 rpm, quick responses and good mood in acceleration.

The set is praised for its efficiency and more lively behavior in retakes, which makes the Pulse turbo an interesting option for those looking for a little smarter performance, with moderate consumption and just as much comfort.

Fiat Pulse 1.0 T200

  • 0 to 100 km/h: 9.4 s (e)/9.7 s (g)
  • City consumption: 8.5 km/l (e)/12 km/l (g)
  • Consumption on the road: 10.2 km/l (e) /14.6 km/l (g)

6. It has hybrid, but very light

In 2024 the Pulse, alongside the Fastback, were Fiat’s first flex electrified. However, the two SUVs received a mild hybrid set.

That is, a 12V battery assists the 1.0 turbo engine in certain situations: start, acceleration and resumption. For this reason, the gain in consumption is discreet.

Fiat Pulse 1.0 T200 Hybrid

  • 0 to 100 km/h: 9.4 s (e) / 9.7 s (g)
  • City consumption: 9.3 km/l (e) / 13.4 km/l (g)
  • Consumption on the road: 10.2 km/l (e) / 14.4 km/l (g)

7. Fiat Pulse Abarth

Fiat Pulse Abarth Publicity

In 2022, Fiat presented the Pulse Abarth, the first model of the sports division produced in Brazil. The version received specific adjustments: suspension (1 cm lower), springs and shock absorbers (12% stiffer), steering (7% more direct), body (13% firmer) and dimensioned brakes.

Here, the game gets serious. The engine is the 1.3 GSE turbo, with 185 hp (ethanol) and 180 hp (gasoline), while the torque delivers 27,5 kgfm at 1.750 rpm.

The result is a compact SUV with sports hatchback performance. In addition, the precision of the steering and the feeling of a car stuck to the ground stand out, with immediate responses to the slightest touch of the accelerator.

Performance and consumption

  • 0 to 100 km/h: 7.6 s (e) / 8.0 s (g)
  • Consumption in the city:) 6.8 km/l (e) / 10.0 km/l (g)
  • Consumption on the road: 8.8 km/l (e) / 12.3 km/l (g)

8. Space and comfort

Although Stellantis reinforces that the Pulse uses the MLA platform, it derives directly from the Argo – which is no demerit. The hatch, for example, is recognized for its good ergonomics and balanced behavior, characteristics preserved in the compact SUV.

The Pulse offers a comfortable driving position, reasonable knee and leg room, but the steering wheel could have a better grip and be smaller. The rear seat is best suited for two adults and a child, and the short seat can cause discomfort on long trips.

The 320-liter trunk is compatible with that of rivals. In the finish, there is a predominance of plastics, with evolution in relation to the Argo, although there are still fitting and acoustic insulation flaws that could be better at road speeds.
