Review: Chevrolet Sonic Premier 2027 has what is expected from a compact SUV
Chevrolet Sonic 2027 bets on comfort and efficiency to compete in the market with Pulse, Kardian and Tera, in the segment of SUVs derived from hatches

Chevrolet decided to bet on a formula that has been gaining ground in the Brazilian market: compact utility vehicles derived from hatchbacks. In a scenario where traditional compact hatches have lost strength among private consumers, models with an adventurous look and elevated driving position have started to occupy this space. It is precisely in this context that the new Chevrolet Sonic appears, a compact SUV based on the Onix and positioned between the hatch and the Tracker.
With prices starting at R$ 130 thousand in the Premier version and R$ 136 thousand in the RS configuration, the Chevrolet Sonic arrives with the mission of disputing consumers looking for an SUV, but without going for larger and more expensive models. However, despite the brand’s official positioning pointing to rivals such as Volkswagen Nivus and Fiat Fastback, in practice, its direct competitors seem to be others: Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardian and Volkswagen Tera.

Sonic Premier keeps Onix base, but expands trunk
Visually, the Sonic adopts its own identity, with a redesigned front and rear, in addition to aesthetic elements that reinforce the compact SUV proposal. Still, its origin in the Onix is evident.

The model preserves the platform and wheelbase of the hatch (2.55 m), but has grown a few centimeters in total length, reaching 4.23 meters. The main advantage of this change appears in the trunk, which offers a capacity of 392 liters, a volume higher than that found in some direct competitors.
In practice, the interior space serves a family of four well, making the model an interesting alternative for those looking for a versatile car for urban use and travel.
Interior repeats hatch formula
When entering Sonic, the strong relationship with Onix is evident. The dashboard, digital instrument panel and multimedia center are practically the same as Chevrolet’s compact hatch.

The technological package, however, is very competitive for the category. The SUV offers items such as:
- Digital panel;
- Multimedia center compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay;
- Digital air conditioning;
- Induction cell phone charger;
- Electric steering;
- Driving Assistance Package (ADAS), including collision warning and lane keeping assist.
Another highlight pointed out by the manufacturer is the seat upholstery system, which uses a layer similar to the “pillow top” concept, seeking to increase comfort during long trips.
1.0 turbo engine favors efficiency and comfort
Under the hood, the Chevrolet Sonic uses the well-known 1.0 turbo flex three-cylinder engine, with direct injection, which delivers 115 hp and 18,9 kgfm of torque, always associated with the six-speed automatic transmission. This is the same version that equips the Tracker.

Although it is not a reference in sports performance, the mechanical set has balanced and silent operation. During evaluations in urban and highway environments, the model demonstrated good capacity to resume and maintain cruising speed.
One of the main highlights was consumption. In mixed use, including heavy traffic and road routes, the SUV recorded averages close to 13 km/l, with gasoline, a competitive result within the segment, which is close to Inmetro averages.
| Fuel | Urban | Road |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | 12.1 km/l | 14.8 km/l |
| Ethanol | 8.4 km/l | 10.4 km/l |
Chevrolet Sonic has comfort as its main argument
At the wheel, Chevrolet’s new compact SUV clearly prioritizes comfort. The suspension is calibrated to absorb irregularities, while the electric steering has well-adjusted assistance for urban and road use.
The sound insulation also draws positive attention, contributing to a more pleasant driving experience on long journeys. Even using a predominantly rigid plastic finish, the assembly is good and conveys a feeling of solidity.
Is Chevrolet Sonic Premier worth buying?

The main issue involving the Chevrolet Sonic Premier may not be in the product itself, but in its market positioning.
The model brings together competitive attributes, such as a good trunk, low consumption, high comfort and an updated technological package. However, when competing for space with larger or more powerful models, such as Volkswagen Nivus and Fiat Fastback, it ends up finding competitors that are difficult to face, which offer more space and performance.
On the other hand, when directly compared to the Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardian and Volkswagen Tera, Chevrolet’s new SUV presents more consistent arguments and can become an interesting alternative for consumers who prioritize comfort, efficiency and versatility in daily use.
