The Renault Boreal arrived on the market surrounded by expectation. Not only because it is one of the most important launches of the French brand because it takes on the mission of competing for space in an increasingly competitive segment. In the Techno version, positioned exactly in the middle of the range, the medium SUV costs R$ 200 thousand and presents itself as an alternative for those looking for content, technology and space without having to invest the approximately R$ 15 thousand additional required by the top-of-the-line configuration.

Visually, Boreal Techno practically does not give away its intermediate position. The model preserves much of the equipment found in the more expensive version and maintains the same standard of interior finish. The leather-covered seats, the digital instrument panel and the multimedia center with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay guarantee the convenience expected from an SUV in this price range.

One of the highlights of the cabin is the two-zone digital climate control with independent physical controls. In a market that increasingly concentrates more functions within the multimedia screen, the solution adopted by Renault facilitates daily use and reduces distractions behind the wheel. Rear seat passengers also have air conditioning vents and USB-C ports, reinforcing the model’s family proposal.

The interior space is one of the main arguments of the Boreal. With a generous wheelbase (2.70 m) and a large cabin, the SUV accommodates four adults with a high level of comfort. Although it is homologated for five occupants, the presence of the central tunnel and the width of the rear seat make the central position less comfortable on long journeys.

The trunk is also worth mentioning. There are 522 liters of capacity by the VDA standard, enough volume to serve families and medium-term trips. The only absence felt in a R$ 200 thousand vehicle is the lid with electric drive, a feature already found in several competitors in the same price range.

In the list of equipment, the Techno offers a complete package of driving assistants. Adaptive cruise control, collision warning, lane keeping assistant and other safety systems raise the technological level of the SUV. There is also an induction charger, electronic parking brake and Auto Hold function, although the latter is positioned in an unintuitive place.

Under the hood is the well-known 1.3 turbo flex engine with 163 hp and 27,5 kgfm of torque, associated with the oil-bathed dual-clutch automated transmission with six gears. The set delivers convincing performance and smooth operation, especially in urban and road use.

The different driving modes change the response of the throttle and transmission. In Sport mode, the gearbox maintains gears longer to explore the maximum power range. The Eco and Comfort modes, on the other hand, favor efficiency and smoothness.

The recorded consumption was close to the official Inmetro figures (below). In urban use with gasoline, the Boreal averaged around 9.7 km/l, a result compatible with the size and weight of the vehicle. Still, when compared to hybrid or electric SUVs that occupy the same price range, the cost of fueling tends to be higher.

Well-balanced suspension

Another positive point is the suspension adjustment. The set adopts firm calibration, but without compromising comfort. On highways, it conveys safety and stability, reducing excessive body movements in curves and quick changes of direction.

The main issue involving the Renault Boreal Techno is not in its qualities, but in the market context. For R$ 200 thousand, the consumer finds electrified SUVs, especially Chinese models, with a higher level of equipment and reduced costs of use. On the other hand, those who still prefer a national vehicle, with a combustion engine, ample interior space and complete technological package, find in the Boreal one of the most balanced options in the category.
