On Thursday (21), the Federal Highway Police (PRF) rescued five goats that were transported in conditions of mistreatment in the trunk of a passenger car. The incident occurred during an inspection operation on the BR-408 highway, near the municipality of São Lourenço da Mata (PE), in the metropolitan region of Recife.

Federal agents were carrying out a routine checkpoint in the vicinity of the Pernambuco Arena when they gave the order to stop the driver of the vehicle. Contrary to the signals, the driver ignored the blockade, accelerated sharply and started a high-speed escape, putting traffic safety on the road at risk.

After a tactical follow-up that lasted for a few kilometers, the man realized that he would be caught, abandoned the car on the side of the road and fled on foot into an area of dense forest. Despite the siege and searches carried out by police teams in the perimeter, the suspect managed to escape and remains at large.

The authorities’ surprise occurred during the mandatory search of the car left behind. When they opened the luggage compartment, the police found the five animals huddled together. The goats were squeezed into a restricted space, subjected to a dark environment, without adequate ventilation and exposed to strong heat, which characterizes an environmental crime.

In consulting the database, the corporation found that the vehicle used in the escape belongs to the fleet of a rental company. The car was towed and taken to a yard. Now, the authorities will use the commercial lease registry to track the identity of the renter, who must answer for evasion, dangerous driving and mistreatment.

Removed from the risk situation, the goats were delivered to the care of the NGO SOS Resgate, based in the city of Carpina. At the protective institution, the animals will receive hydration, specialized food and veterinary evaluation.
