A forgotten headset inside a Renault Sandero was the key piece for the Military Police of Paraná, in joint action with the security forces of Santa Catarina, to recover the vehicle and arrest the theft suspect on Monday afternoon (18). The crime, which began in Curitiba, was solved more than 130 kilometers away, in the city of Joinville (SC).

The case began at dawn, in the Porta neighborhood, in the capital of Paraná. Images from the security circuit of a residential condominium recorded the moment when the suspect breaks through the access gate and carries out the crime. The police report points out that the invader’s original intention was to take bicycles from the building, but he changed his mind when he came across the car. The theft was only noticed by the owner around 6 am, when he woke up.

The victim’s initial frustration, however, gave way to hope because of a technological detail. Among the personal belongings left inside the car was a headset equipped with a geolocation system, such as the Apple AirPods. When accessing the tracking application on his cell phone, the owner found that the device emitted a signal no longer in Curitiba, but on the outskirts of Joinville. Thus, the Military Police was immediately called.

According to midshipman Marcus Tavares, from the 13th Battalion of the PMPR, the agility in the exchange of information between the corporations of the two states was decisive. With the alert issued and the real-time location provided by the electronic equipment, the Municipal Guard and the Santa Catarina Military Police set up a siege. The vehicle was intercepted while it was stopped under an overpass of the BR-101 highway, at the height of the Nova Brasília neighborhood.

At the time of the approach, a 30-year-old man was occupying the vehicle and confessed the crime to the agents. During the search inside the car, the authorities seized the key, a cell phone and R$ 3,307.65 in cash. The amount recovered is lower than that reported by the victim, who claimed to keep about R$ 10 thousand in the car before the theft. Arrested in the act, the suspect was taken to the Joinville Police Duty Center, and the case remains under investigation for the full clarification of the facts.
