New BYD Dolphin hybrid promises to run 1,040 km and drive like an electric

Entry-level model in BYD's plug-in line combines running as electric on a daily basis with more than a thousand kilometers of autonomy on trips

BYD has unveiled the Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid hatch developed for the European market but expected to arrive soon in Brazil. Positioned in the competitive segment of electrified compacts, the model combines electric driving and wide range for travel, with the latest generation of the Chinese manufacturer’s Super Hybrid DM-i technology.

Under the hood, BYD installed a 163 hp and 21.4 kgfm electric motor The set is added to a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a second electric powertrain and the Blade battery, the brand’s own technology. According to the manufacturer, the hatch accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8,3 seconds.

The model will have two battery options. The entry-level Active version receives a 7.42 kWh unit, enough for up to 40 km of electric range and about 1,020 km of combined range. The Boost, Comfort and Sport configurations adopt an 18.3 kWh battery, which extends the electric range to up to 105 km and the total range to 1,040 km.

With a length of 4.16 m, a width of 1.83 m and a wheelbase of 2.61 m, the hatch accommodates five occupants and offers a trunk of 425 liters, which reaches 1,225 liters with the seats folded down. The look follows the identity of the Ocean Series line, with LED interconnected taillights, flowing lines and a floating roof.

Inside, the cabin features an 8.8″ digital panel and a multimedia center of up to 12.8″, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The gear selector, now on the steering column, frees up space on the console. Depending on the version, the model can include an induction charger, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, panoramic roof, head-up display and 360-degree cameras.

In safety, all versions have an assistance package that brings together adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assistant, cross traffic alert and driver attention monitor. The first orders open in the summer, with deliveries scheduled for early autumn.
