The Chinese manufacturer BYD confirmed the arrival of the new Dolphin G DM-i, the unprecedented plug-in hybrid version of the hatch that debuts in Europe before arriving in Brazil. Developed to operate in the competitive segment of compact hatches , the model should have as its main asset a combined range of more than 1,000 km, achieved by combining the traditional fuel tank with a rechargeable battery.

Pricing will be made official during launch in June 2026, with deliveries to consumers scheduled for the fall. The automaker’s strategy aims to attract customers who want the economy of electric driving in everyday urban use, but seek the safety and practicality of the combustion engine for longer road routes.

Reworked design and adjusted proportions

Visually, the hybrid variant departs a bit from its electric counterpart. The front adopts narrower headlights, active air intakes and aerodynamic flow passages integrated into the bumper. The sides received recessed door handles, darkened wheels and rear columns finished in glossy black, which reinforces the visual perception of a floating roof.

In size, the Dolphin G measures 4.16 m long and 1.82 m wide. In practice, the vehicle shrunk 13 cm in length, but gained 5.5 cm in width compared to the 100% electric Dolphin sold on the continent. The cabin preserves the technological focus, offering an integrally darkened finish, floating multimedia center and a 360° camera system.

Engineered mechanical specifications

Although the manufacturer still maintains the data under embargo, the automotive sector projects that the hatch will inherit the same powertrain as the Atto 2 DM-i model, equivalent to the Yuan Pro hybrid.

If the forecast is confirmed, the car will be powered by the combination of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric unit, generating 209 hp together. The set is expected to use BYD’s own lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with capacities of 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh. In the rigorous European WLTP cycle, this guarantees running up to 90 km in a strictly electric way, eliminating the consumption of fossil fuel in daily activities.
