Toyota has officially reintroduced the manual transmission in the 2026 Corolla lineup in Japan, but for a strictly educational purpose. The model arrives to replace the veteran Corolla Axio, which ended production in 2025 and was the standard for driver training in the country.

Technical configurations and the differential of the “five pedals”
The sedan is available in two engines: a purely combustion version, with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine and 118 hp coupled to the six-speed gearbox, and a 1.8-liter hybrid variant for schools that prioritize electrification.

The great differential of the project is the installation of a second set of pedals on the instructor’s side, totaling five pedals inside the vehicle. In addition, the car has extra rearview mirrors to eliminate blind spots and a dedicated dashboard for the instructor to monitor speed in real time.
Spartan interior and Japan’s cheapest Corolla
Inside, the finish prioritizes durability over luxury. The console replaces multimedia centers with GPS supports and an extra button for the horn on the passenger side. Externally, the basic look features 15″ steel wheels with hubcaps. The manual version costs approximately US$ 13.600 (R$ 68.300), making it the most affordable option in the current Corolla line. The basic manual version is restricted to sales only to educational institutions, with no plans for a general public sale.
