Land Rover has confirmed that the Discovery Sport will end global production in December 2026. The seven-seater SUV was launched in 2014 and was once the brand’s best-selling car, but today it is bitter with a lower volume than more expensive models.

In addition to the advanced age for a car in this segment, the Discovery Sport will also be discontinued because it does not comply with European legislation. All cars sold in the old continent from January 2027 must have advanced driver distraction warning systems and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

The bigger brother Discovery is also at risk of being retired without leaving a successor, ending this family of models. The successor to the Discovery Sport will be the new Defender Sport, which will have a beefier look and electric versions.

Production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rove Evoque have already ended in Brazil. According to Quatro Rodas magazine , activities at the Itatiaia (RJ) plant were interrupted in June.

Chery has already held meetings with the city of Itatiaia to negotiate negotiations to take over the factory. If this is achieved, the manufacturing unit will be expanded to be able to produce models from Omoda, Jaecoo, Lepas and Jetour. The most likely to be the first is the Omoda 4 with a 1.0 turbo flex engine.

The Chinese intend to use the factory in Rio de Janeiro to serve Brazil and foreign markets. But for now they are in the negotiation phase and there are no confirmations of the purchase.

At the same time, Land Rover has a partnership with Chery in China that resulted in the creation of the Freelander brand. This new division makes cars with Chinese platforms and with a focus on the Asian country.

There are plans for Freelander to go global and be part of Chery’s expansion offensive that already includes Omoda, Jaecoo, Lepas, iCaur and Jetour. If Brazil is in the sights of this brand, there is a risk of it being done in Itatiaia.
