Presented in Beijing, the model resurrects its iconic name as an independent brand and uses a Chinese platform to reach global markets
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and China’s Chery made the production version of the Freelander 8 official during the Beijing Motor Show. The SUV marks the rebirth of the iconic name, now positioned as an independent brand under the CJLR joint venture . With global ambitions, the model will have left and right direction configurations, signaling a strategic offensive beyond Asian borders.
The Freelander 8 is built on the iMAX platform, the flexible architecture that supports different levels of electrification: from 100% electric versions to plug-in hybrids and electric with range extender (REEV). Although the detailed technical sheet remains confidential, the manufacturer confirms that the SUV surpasses the Land Rover Defender 110 in length, width and height, establishing itself at a higher level of size and interior space.

Visually, the SUV adopts a minimalist and technological language. The front gives up the traditional grille in favor of a smooth panel, flanked by square-designed headlights. At the top of the windshield, the presence of a LiDAR sensor highlights the bet on advanced autonomous driving systems. On the sides, the model preserves robust elements such as flared wheel arches and roof bars, while the sloping D-pillar makes a subtle reference to the design of the original Freelander.

Inside, although official images are still scarce, the project foresees a digitized environment with screens that occupy almost the entire length of the panel. Another promised highlight is the seats with “zero gravity” technology, focused on ergonomics for long-distance travel. The launch is part of a broader plan by CJLR, which foresees the introduction of six new models over the next five years, consolidating the Freelander brand as a pillar of electrification for the group.
