Hyundai presented at the Beijing Motor Show the Ioniq V, an electric sedan that symbolizes a strategic shift by the automaker in China. Production version of the Concept Venus prototype, unveiled a few weeks ago, the model sets a record gap between the concept display and the commercial launch. Although it adopts the Roman numeral “V”, the vehicle is exclusive to the local market and should not be confused with the Ioniq 5 SUV, sold globally by the brand.

The sedan marks the debut of “The Origin” design language, which signals a departure from the “pixel” aesthetic that characterizes the Ioniq line in other countries. The look bets on angular surfaces, fastback silhouette and frameless doors. With a length of 4.90 meters and a wheelbase of 2.90 meters, the Ioniq V uses the proportions allowed by the electric platform to offer superior interior space than models of similar size with a combustion engine, such as the Sonata.

Inside, Hyundai has adhered to the radical minimalism demanded by the Chinese consumer. The dashboard ditches almost all physical buttons, centering functions on a 27-inch 4K widescreen that extends to the passenger side. The traditional instrument panel behind the steering wheel has been suppressed, with essential driving information being projected directly onto the windshield via head-up display.

In terms of performance, the manufacturer confirmed that the long-range version will have a range of more than 600 km, following the Chinese measurement cycle (CLTC). The launch is the first of an offensive of 20 new models planned for the next five years in the region. The automaker’s goal is to regain market share and reach 500,000 units annually by 2031, including SUVs and electric vehicles with range extenders (EREV).
