Would you trust the trunk tire repair kit? Honda's has already injured eight people and led to a recall of 1 million cars
Honda has announced the recall of more than 1 million vehicles in the United States because of a defect in the tire repair kit that can cause injuries. The recall covers 744,350 units of the CR-V Hybrid and 305,013 of the Accord Hybrid, both from the 2023 to 2026 lines, in addition to 340 copies of the CR-V Fuel Cell EV, from the 2025 and 2026 model years, totaling 1,049,883 cars.
According to the automaker, the failure occurs when the nozzle of the kit is incorrectly connected to the tire valve, which raises the pressure inside the sealant bottle. In part of the units, the relief valve that should release this excess does not work as expected, and the pressure rises until the lid of the container loosens forcefully, which can hit anyone nearby.

Honda attributed the problem to the kit design and the supplier’s manufacturing processes. In development, engineers did not anticipate the pressure build-up caused by the wrong nozzle fitting and included a leak valve that proved unnecessary; In production, part of the relief valves was adjusted inadequately.
The investigation dates back to April 2023. At first, the supplier attributed the cases to incorrect use by customers, but Honda later identified a possible failure in the relief valve. On May 28, 2026, it concluded that there was a security risk and opened the recall.
To that date, the manufacturer had registered 53 warranty claims and eight reports of injuries linked to the defect. There were no deaths.
Owners will be called to dealerships, who will replace the nozzle of the kit or install a bottle of revised sealant, free of charge. The upgraded parts eliminate the valve that contributed to pressure buildup. Warning letters must be sent by July 27.
