Prototypes reduce gigantic proportions of the traditional line and test off-road exploration technologies that should inspire future models
GMC has introduced two new electric concepts that reinterpret the Hummer line in a considerably smaller and more agile form factor. Named Hummer X SUV and Hummer X Pickup, the prototypes maintain the robust and militarized identity characteristic of the family, but solve one of the main targets of criticism of current production models: the exaggerated proportions and excessive weight. Now, the bet is on more rational dimensions, a new visual direction and the use of cutting-edge technologies aimed at off-road exploration.
Developed by General Motors’ advanced design studio in California, the models feature significant aesthetic changes from the big guys already on the market. The concepts bring more marked and angular cutouts in the bodywork, short overhangs, flat roof and a two-tone finish in the closed version. The resizing is drastic: the Hummer X SUV measures 4.78 meters in length — similar in size to a Jeep Commander — while the pickup reaches 5.27 meters, with the size of medium pickup trucks.

In addition to the measures contained, the concepts work as a technological showcase for the North American manufacturer. The highlight is the autonomous reconnaissance drone, designed to take off from the ceiling, fly over narrow trails and identify obstacles in real time, returning to the vehicle alone. The package also includes the “Hummer Hub”, an ecosystem of applications integrated with the multimedia center to facilitate the planning of adventure routes.
Despite the commercial appeal and practicality that smaller electric SUVs would bring to the brand’s portfolio, GMC has ruled out, at least for now, serial manufacturing. The automaker says that both are strictly laboratory studies, created to guide future design, connectivity and off-road capability solutions for the next launches of the line.
