A homemade device installed in a pickup truck to release smoke was the bet of a 29-year-old driver to escape the Federal Highway Police (PRF) last Wednesday night (27), in Ourizona, in the north of Paraná. The maneuver failed: the man was arrested in the act, and agents seized almost a ton of marijuana that he was carrying.

Equipment of this type works in a similar way to the smoke machines used in concerts. A reservoir pours oil or fluid onto a heated surface — usually part of the exhaust system — and vaporization creates a dense cloud, capable of reducing the visibility of those behind and opening a gap for escape.

That’s what the driver tried to do. After disobeying the stop order, he accelerated, started to travel in the wrong way and activated the smoke screen to mislead the team.

The tactic did not last long. On the PR-552 highway, the driver lost control of the vehicle and left the lane. He then abandoned the truck still in motion and tried to escape on foot through an area of vegetation, where he was located and detained.

In the dumpster and in the back seat, the police found marijuana tablets that totaled 961.8 kilograms. The inspection also revealed tampering with the identifying signs: the truck had a record of theft in the state of São Paulo.

In addition to drug trafficking, provided for in the Drug Law, the conduct can lead the driver to answer for tampering with a vehicle identification sign and for crimes related to the stolen car, such as reception. Running away at high speed and in the wrong direction, added to the use of the smoke device on public roads, can also be framed as dangerous driving, as it exposes other drivers to risk.

The suspect and the drug were sent to the Civil Police Station of Maringá, where the occurrence was registered.
