On April 28, the global shipping industry set a new record with the delivery of the Glovis Leader ship in Guangzhou, China. The vessel is now considered the largest cargo ship of vehicles (called ro-ro) in the world. The project surpasses previous records for flagship ships, such as BYD’s Explorer 01, and will be useful in the country’s aggressive new vehicle export policy.

The Glovis Leader has a nominal capacity to carry up to 10,800 cars, spread over 14 strategically designed decks. With 230 meters long and 40 meters wide, the vessel stands out for its logistical versatility: its structure allows the safe loading of a varied range ranging from electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles to heavy trucks and industrial machinery.

Energy efficiency and dual-fuel technology

Designed to meet stringent international Tier III emissions standards, the freighter utilizes a modern dual-fuel system, alternating between LNG (liquefied natural gas) and conventional fuel. This technology drastically reduces the carbon footprint of the marine operation.

Energy efficiency is enhanced by an optimized hull and waste heat recovery systems. During navigation, a spindle generator produces the electricity needed for internal operation. In addition, when docked, the ship can connect directly to the shore power grid, eliminating the burning of fuels and the emission of pollutants in port areas.
