Chery Stockman bets on the union between diesel engine and electrification to win over traditional consumers in the segment
Chery presented the Stockman, a pickup truck that the Chinese brand classifies as the first in the world to combine a diesel engine and a plug-in hybrid system. The proposal is unusual in the segment: instead of electrifying a gasoline engine, as rivals do, Chery kept diesel — the preferred fuel of pickup truck buyers — and added recharging at the outlet. The model debuts in Australia in the last quarter of 2026, the first market to receive it, where it will face established diesel pickup trucks such as Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
Initially revealed as a prototype under the code KP31, the Stockman had its name defined in June by popular vote among Australians. The set combines a 2.5 turbodiesel engine with a plug-in hybrid system and delivers, together, 476 hp and 81,6 kgfm; Diesel, alone, yields about 286 hp and 66,3 kgfm. The battery, whose capacity has not yet been disclosed, is housed in the rear of the chassis.
The range in all-electric mode reaches 170 km, according to figures released in China, although the Australian Chery cites up to 100 km in the NEDC cycle. With 47% thermal efficiency, the diesel engine would consume about 10% less than a conventional diesel, according to the manufacturer.

More than efficiency, Stockman bets on its off-road vocation. It features a reduction gearbox, mechanical transfer system and three differentials with independent locking — front, center and rear — in addition to a capacity for 1,000 kg of cargo and a trailer of up to 3,500 kg with brake. Crankcase guards, snorkel guards and tow points reinforce the adventurous appeal.
At 5.45 m long, it is larger than one-ton pickup trucks like the Ford Ranger, which it exceeds by about 8 cm; The prototype was 1.92 m wide and 1.93 m high. The robust look, compared to that of the Ford Bronco, maintains straight lines, circular headlights and a grille with the brand name written in full. In the cabin, two screens integrated into the dashboard and the maintenance of physical commands in the center console stand out.

The new engine will not be exclusive to Stockman. Chery intends to take it to other markets — Latin America, the Middle East and Europe — and to other models, such as the Himla pickup, presented by CAOA Chery as a market study at the 2025 São Paulo Motor Show. Stockman’s arrival in Brazil has not yet been confirmed, but the diesel-electric formula can reinforce the brand’s offensive in the country.
