The Brazilian automotive market registered a significant change in consumer preference in April 2026. For the first time in history, a 100% electric vehicle, the BYD Dolphin Mini, secured the sixth position in the overall ranking of registrations, with 6,880 units sold. The performance is emblematic for surpassing the Hyundai HB20, a model that was on the podium of national sales in the last decade and ended the month in eighth place, with 6,764 registrations.

The consolidation of electric in retail

The rise of the Dolphin Mini to the elite squad of the market signals that electrification has gone from being a topic restricted to technology enthusiasts to occupying the center of retail purchasing decisions. By positioning the model with competitive prices compared to entry-level hatches equipped with thermal engines, the Chinese manufacturer was able to mitigate the barrier of initial cost — traditionally the biggest obstacle to battery technology in the country.
Infrastructure and market maturity

This reconfiguration of the ranking also reflects continued investments in infrastructure. The expansion of the fast charging network in urban centers and main highways has reduced the “autonomy anxiety” of Brazilian drivers. Added to this, the simplified maintenance cost and energy efficiency per kilometer driven have become decisive arguments in the face of the volatility of fossil fuel prices.
The success of the compact, equipped with the Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, crowns BYD’s commercial offensive in 2026. By displacing consolidated veterans such as the HB20, the Dolphin Mini not only changes registration statistics, but forces the traditional industry to accelerate its plans to nationalize hybrid and electric technologies to maintain relevance in the new national automotive scenario.
