The Brazilian antique car market reached a new level of appreciation last weekend. Two examples of the Chevrolet Opala, recovered in the “restomod” style, were sold for a total of R$ 1 million at an auction held at the Carde Museum, in Campos do Jordão (SP). The units, dating from 1976 and 1979, received individual bids of R$ 500 thousand each after a dispute that exceeded 20 offers per lot.

The models are part of the Chevrolet Vintage, an official initiative of General Motors aimed at rescuing the brand’s historical heritage in the country. Unlike a conventional restoration, which seeks absolute fidelity to period components, the restomod preserves the iconic lines of the coupe, but adopts a contemporary mechanical assembly to improve drivability and reliability in daily use.

Under the hood, the traditional 4.1-liter inline six-cylinder engine has been fully upgraded by BTS Performance. Now equipped with FuelTech electronic injection, the engine works in conjunction with a five-speed Tremec manual transmission, which replaces the original gearbox. The dynamic set-up also includes recalibrated suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and a disc brake system resized to support the new breath of the set.

Refined interior and exclusivity

The cabin maintains the classic design of the SS version, but incorporates modern comforts such as power steering, air conditioning and a sound system with Bluetooth connectivity. Safety has been enhanced with three-point belts for all occupants and leather-covered seats. On the outside, the green example displays an unprecedented shade with matte black details, dispensing with the traditional chrome.

In addition to the Opals, the event negotiated a Chevrolet S10 winner of the Sertões Rally for R$ 450 thousand. As a special deference, buyers of the coupes will be able to choose to pick up the vehicles directly at the plant in São Caetano do Sul (SP), where the models were originally produced five decades ago.
