Is electric car insurance still more expensive? Check values of battery-powered and combustion models

AutoPapo survey shows that the difference in prices has decreased with the advance of electrified vehicles in the country; see the comparison and understand the reasons

In recent months, sales of exclusively battery-powered vehicles have registered impressive growth and, today, these models already represent a good share of the Brazilian market. At first glance, this type of vehicle has several advantages such as lower environmental impact, savings in consumption and a high level of technology. However, one aspect that generates doubt and concern is the price of electric car insurance.

In March 2025, AutoPapo made a comparison of coverage for combustion and electric models that compete in the same categories. The result was a significant difference, in which cars that use electricity as their main source of energy had a price up to R$ 8,000 more expensive.

However, since then, the Brazilian reality has changed and, today, electrified cars (hybrid and electric) have reached the mark of 21.1% share in the national automotive market. The 100% electric models, more specifically, registered 25,782 registrations in July 2026, an increase of 268% compared to July 2025 (7,010 units).

Therefore, the AutoPapo editorial staff brought an updated insurance comparison between models of different categories that have electric and combustion engines.

What is the difference between electric car insurance and combustion model insurance?

According to Professor José Varanda, coordinator of the Undergraduate Courses at the School of Business and Insurance (ENS), just like combustion cars, battery-powered vehicles have basic coverage, for collision, fire, theft and robbery, damage to third parties, 24-hour assistance, among others. The specialist points out that the main difference is in the particularities of the electric vehicle, which can make certain repairs more expensive. Examples are:

  • High voltage battery;
  • Electronic components;
  • Need for specialized labor

Therefore, some insurance companies offer specific services and coverage for electric vehicles, such as battery protection and charging cable and towing to a charging point. Thus, the distinction is much more related to the characteristics and repair cost of the insured vehicle than to the insurance itself.

The quotes were simulated on an insurance company’s website using the same personal data for new vehicles from the year 2026 considering personal use.

Volkswagen Nivus Comfortline 2026 R$ 156.890 R$ 3.053,60

In 2025, the insurance value of the Dolphin was almost double the price quoted for the Nivus. Now, in 2026, the difference still exists, but it has narrowed considerably.

Difference between the price of electric car insurance and combustion vehicle still exists, but it is smaller

Analyzing the values of the quotations, it is possible to see that in many cases the difference in prices between battery-powered and combustion models was small. The comparison between the Renault Boreal and the Geely EX5 (R$ 344.10) are examples of this, as well as the parallel of the two engines of the Kwid (R$ 292.30), something that did not happen in 2025. Professor José Varanda explains the reasons for this change:

“Some time ago, electric cars represented a bigger novelty for insurance companies. At that time, there were fewer electric vehicles circulating and, consequently, less availability of parts, a smaller number of specialized workshops and little experience of insurance companies with claims. All this increased the uncertainty of insurers in the acceptance of insurance and could even raise the price.”

However, the expert points out that, with the increase in the volume of electric vehicles circulating in the market and with a greater variety of models, more information has become available for the insurer’s risk assessment. Thus, although insurance for electric models, in general, still costs more, it is currently possible to find premiums that are very close to the value quoted for combustion vehicles, or even lower.

For José Varanda “the cost of insurance depends more and more on the vehicle model, the repair cost, the experience of claims, the insurer and above all the profile of the insured”.

Why has the price of electric car insurance changed?

According to the representative of , the main factors for the change in the dynamics of battery-powered car insurance are:

  • Increase in the fleet of electric cars: today insurers have better knowledge of these vehicles and can accumulate more information about the frequency and average cost of claims;
  • Increased competition in the market: the growth in the supply of new models and in the service network may contribute to the reduction of the electric car insurance premium;

On the other hand, the expert also points out that the components of the electric car, such as the battery and electronic systems, continue to have high costs and many parts are still imported. In addition, certain repairs to electric cars require specialized professionals, which can keep insurance more expensive on some models.

For the coordinator of ENS graduations, the market is maturing and the cost of insurance tends to increasingly reflect the specific risk of each vehicle, and not simply the fact that it is electric.
