Volvo Penta is taking to the São Paulo Boat Show 2026 the IPS Hybrid, a propulsion system that combines a combustion engine and an electric motor in leisure boats. The presentation is conceptual: recently launched in Europe, the set should only reach the Brazilian market in 2027, according to the company.

The event takes place from September 24 to 29, at São Paulo Expo, in the south of the capital of São Paulo, and brings together shipyards, manufacturers of engines, accessories and equipment.

Three navigation

modes Developed from Volvo Penta IPS in versions with 13-liter engines, from IPS900 to IPS1350, the system covers the range from 700 hp to 999 hp. Powertrains, batteries, energy management and controls are integrated into a single package, from rudder to propeller.

There are three modes of operation: electric, combustion and hybrid. In all-electric mode, the vessel navigates at low speed, docks accurately and remains anchored silently. The high-capacity batteries also power onboard equipment and amenities without the need to drive a generator.

According to Leandro Barbosa, head of marine engines at Volvo Penta, the solution “allows you to navigate and anchor in almost total silence, with very low emissions”.

All components are connected by the Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system, which keeps features such as Joystick Driving, Assisted Docking, Autopilot and Glass Cockpit in operation in the three driving modes.

IPS Professional and maintenance

plans The second highlight of the brand at the event is the IPS Professional, a version intended for leisure and commercial boats up to 180 feet, equivalent to about 55 meters.

The IPS (Inboard Performance System) positions the propellers facing the front of the boat and, because it is more compact, frees up space in the hull, an area that can be converted into more leisure environment, an extra cabin or a diving platform.

Volvo Penta also takes advantage of the event to reinforce its maintenance plans in the maritime sector. The contracts allow services to be carried out at any of the brand’s Authorized Centers, distributed in marinas in the country, with technicians trained by the company and genuine parts.

According to the manufacturer, the model transforms variable maintenance costs into fixed values and allows the owner to know in advance how much and when he will pay for the services. At the booth, an interactive simulator calculates the investment and issues a proposal.
