Made for sugarcane, Volkswagen’s new extra-heavy truck faces 150 tons
Constellation 33.540 6x4 has a 540 hp engine and reaches the ceiling of the resolution that releases compositions of up to 91 tons in the sugarcane

Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus launched the Constellation 33.540 6×4, an extra-heavy model developed for severe off-road operations, with a focus on agribusiness. The truck has a GVW (total combined gross weight) of 91 tons and a CMT (maximum traction capacity) of 125 tons. In special applications, according to the manufacturer, the set can reach 150 tons, subject to the automaker’s consultancy.
The numbers are not accidental. Resolution 872/2021 of Contran, pointed out by VW as a reference for the project, regulates the circulation of combinations of cargo vehicles with GVW greater than 74 tons and equal to or less than 91 tons intended for the transport of sugarcane. It is exactly the roof of the new Constellation.
What the rule requires
The standard determines that the composition is formed by a 6×4 tractor truck with a CMT equal to or greater than the weight of the set, plus a three-axle semi-trailer and a five-axle trailer. The combination needs a special transit permit, valid for one year, and must measure between 28 and 30 meters.
There are also operating restrictions: the authorized route cannot exceed 80 kilometers, the maximum speed is 60 km/h, convoys are prohibited and the steering wheel can only be taken over by a driver trained for this type of vehicle. It is this niche, on the short routes between the crop and the mill, that the automaker aims at.
New engine and structural
reinforcements Under the cabin is the new D26 Ultra engine, with 540 hp, with exclusive calibration for off-road application. According to VW, in addition to the power gain, the set can yield up to 5% fuel savings, which weighs on the account of fleets that run loaded all year round.
The manufacturer claims to have driven more than one million kilometers in durability tests in extreme conditions before putting the model on the market. This process resulted in reinforcements in the chassis, new radiator protection for severe applications, a reinforced fifth wheel for high loads and a new hitch ramp, which the company associates with more safety and durability of the components.
To face uneven terrain and the typical accesses of operations in the field, the truck received raised suspension and a greater angle of attack. In the cabin, the air suspension now has automatic adjustment and new damping curves, a change aimed at driver comfort on long journeys.
The automaker did not disclose the engine torque, the price of the truck or the start date of sales.
