The Port of Itajaí (SC) is preparing a mega logistics operation for the unloading of 11,700 BYD vehicles, marking one of the largest movements of its kind at the Santa Catarina terminal. The arrival of the Chinese automaker’s fleet of electric and hybrid models will be a test of the technical capacity of the port infrastructure and promises a strong impact on the local economy, according to the city hall.

To optimize the flow and avoid overloads, the large-scale import was strategically divided into two stages. The first takes place next Tuesday (May 26), with the docking of a ship belonging to the Italian shipowner Grimaldi, responsible for unloading an initial batch of 4,500 cars.

The second and largest phase of the operation is scheduled for June 23. On this date, the terminal will receive the BYD Shenzhen ship (Explorer class), the manufacturer’s own ro-ro vessel (name given to ‘stork ships’) designed exclusively for the transoceanic transport of vehicles, which will bring the remaining 7,200 units.

To ensure the fluidity of the initial stage, the authorities set up a task force on duty. The transshipment work will start at 7 am uninterruptedly for 24 hours, mobilizing about 150 port workers and an initial fleet of 90 stork trucks for the immediate flow of cars.

Scheduled routes to minimize urban bottlenecks

Given the road impact of dozens of trucks circulating continuously, the municipality established a strict traffic plan to avoid congestion on the streets of Itajaí. The empty stork trucks will access the port complex from exit 120 of the BR-101 highway, traveling a predetermined route along Adolfo Konder and Carolina Vailatti avenues, as well as Indaial and Felipe Reiser streets.

After loading, the exit route will channel heavy vehicles from Felipe Reiser Street towards Benjamin Franklin Pereira and Blumenau Streets, until they reach Reinaldo Schmithausen Avenue for the definitive return to BR-101.
