The temptation to cut short the journey led two men into a logistical and survival nightmare in the middle of an Indian forest
A truck driver and his helper experienced five days of absolute tension in a remote forest in India after blindly following a route suggested by Google Maps. The unusual episode, which gained repercussion in the local press, took place in the mountainous region of Niyamgiri. There, the cargo vehicle, crammed with cement, ended up severely stuck on a deserted road, surrounded by dense forest and inhabited by herds of wild elephants.
The trap began when the professionals decided to adopt a shortcut indicated by the navigation application. The promise of the system was tempting: a significant saving of about 60 kilometers compared to the original route, significantly shortening the trip. However, the suggested path was nothing more than a rustic and rugged trail, absolutely without structure to support the weight and dimensions of a large vehicle.

Completely isolated in the middle of nowhere, without any cell phone signal for communication and fearing the approach of wild animals, the two occupants transformed the cab of the truck into a safe shelter. They remained cloistered, waiting for help that seemed unlikely. Only on the third day, the main driver made the risky decision to abandon the safety of the vehicle and go on foot in search of help through the jungle. His helper remained in the truck for two more days, until both were located by residents of a nearby village, who provided water and supplies to the survivors.
The rescue of the men, however, did not solve the logistical bottleneck. The weight of the load prevented the truck from being towed immediately. The solution found by the local community was to unload the cement gradually, with the help of tractors. The process is slow and the vehicle remains partially stranded at the site due to the extreme difficulty of accessing the rough terrain.
The case illustrates a serious limitation of Google Maps: the absence of a reliable navigation mode for trucks, causing the algorithm to not differentiate between passenger lanes and those suitable for heavy transport. Above all, the alarming incident reinforces that the convenience of technological innovation should never replace human common sense and careful evaluation of real road conditions.
