Armored car requires attention beyond the price at the time of purchase

Experts warn to be careful with documentation, armor condition and maintenance costs before closing the deal

The Brazilian automotive armor market continues to expand. According to the Brazilian Shielding Association (Abrablin), the sector moved around R$ 3.5 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow in the coming years. With more options of armored vehicles available, both new and semi-new, experts warn that the purchase decision requires an analysis that goes beyond the advertised value.

Avallon Blindagens explained to AutoPapo that one of the consumer’s first choices is between purchasing a zero-kilometer vehicle for armoring or opting for a used one already protected. While used ones usually offer lower initial costs, they require a detailed assessment of the origin of the armor, the maintenance history and the condition of the ballistic components.

Buying an armored used car usually offers better cost-benefit, because the depreciation of the armor has already occurred. However, it requires careful analysis of the history, the armoring machine, the structural state of the armor and the material used”, explains Carlos Sanches, commercial manager of the Avallon Blindagens showroom.

Among the documents considered essential are the shielding certificate, technical reports, invoices, records of the responsible armoring company and the history of revisions. A physical inspection is also recommended to check finishing, glass functioning, sealing and possible signs of wear.

In armored glass, problems such as bubbles, whitish appearance, misalignment and movement difficulties can indicate material compromise. Excessive noise in the doors, infiltrations and difficulties in opening compartments may point to the need for technical evaluation.

According to Sanches, not all problems can be identified visually. “In the armor of the opaque part, which is on the bodywork, possible compromises may not be perceived visually. Therefore, specialized technical evaluations and preventive maintenance are essential to preserve the structural integrity and ballistic efficiency of the vehicle.”

Although armor does not have a defined expiration date, its components suffer natural wear and tear. Glass usually shows more evident signs between five and ten years of use, while materials applied to the bodywork tend to last longer when properly maintained.

“The maintenance of the armor needs to be done rigorously. An old armor without preventive maintenance can compromise safety and generate high corrective costs”, emphasizes the expert.

Another point of attention is the increase in weight caused by the armor. The change directly impacts components such as suspension, brakes, shock absorbers, hinges and window mechanisms, requiring periodic reviews to preserve the safety and operation of the vehicle.

The materials used in the process also influence the final result. More modern technologies can reduce the additional weight and minimize impacts on fuel consumption and the car’s dynamic behavior.

Experts also warn of offers far below the market average. Reduced values can be associated with lower quality materials, ballistic cover failures or inadequate manufacturing processes. Therefore, the recommendation is to evaluate the reputation of the armored company, carry out independent expertise when necessary and verify which safety tests were carried out before the purchase.

“Most perform laboratory tests, but the ideal is to choose armor companies that perform ballistic tests on real bodywork, with shots at the points of vulnerability. This ensures that the car will receive materials that are really tested and approved in real conditions”, concludes Sanches.
