A song by Roberto Carlos warned that “Your grandchildren will ask you in a few years about the whales that crossed oceans”. Our grandchildren will most likely question us about the sedans that crisscrossed the streets. But while extinction does not come, let’s enjoy the resistant ones in the category, such as the Fiat Cronos.

The compact sedan derived from Argo, in fact, got a breather in 2025. Fiat updated the 2026 Cronos lineup, with a new grille, straighter bumpers, new finishes and equipment.

Proof of the importance of the sedan within Stellantis’ commercial strategies in the region. The car sells well in Argentina, where it is produced. And here it has a strong appeal with direct sales, taxi drivers and app drivers.

But the Fiat Cronos can also be a rational and interesting option for small families. It offers good handling and one of the largest trunks among compact cars.

Of course, this does not mean a generous volume of sales. But let’s agree that aquatic mammals have not disappeared (yet) as in the song “As baleias”, quoted at the beginning of the article and recorded in the early 1980s.

Which gives us hope that our grandchildren will still know the sedans. Anyway, just in case, save this link about the most important facts about Fiat Cronos in its top-of-the-line Precision version to show your granddaughter or grandson in the future.

1. Fiat Cronos Precision Performance

There is no way not to repeat it. Stellantis engineering has achieved one of the best marriages for a CVT-type gearbox in the history of the industry. And it’s no exaggeration, even more so if we talk about the Fiat Cronos in urban use.

The 1.3 Firefly engine is no big deal. It is aspirated, has 8 valves, simple valve timing and does not even dream of frills such as direct injection. But its simplicity is what makes the difference.

Even more so with the continuously variable gearbox. There are 107 hp of power with ethanol and 98 hp with gasoline. Enough for competent accelerations in the city.

Don’t expect exciting behavior from the Cronos 1.3, but it doesn’t disappoint either

Obviously, it’s no Lightning McQueen. According to Fiat, 0 to 100 km/h is 11.7 seconds with ethanol and 12.5 s with gasoline. This evolution takes place smoothly, but without the vices of a car equipped with CVT.

The Aisin transmission used in the Fiat Cronos has seven simulated gears and gives that typical gradual evolution, without jerks but also without holding the revs too much. That is, accelerations with comfort without feeling like a blender.

At high speeds on the highway, the reality is different. After 80 km/h, it takes some patience to pack above 100 km/h.

Resumptions also require discipline. You step on it and the sedan takes a while to respond – the torque 13,7 kgfm (ethanol) and 13,2 kgfm (gasoline) only at 4 thousand rpm. A tip is to use sequential gear changes when overtaking and mountain climbing, for example.

2. Consumption

  • Urban ethanol consumption: 8.6 km/l
  • Urban petrol consumption: 12.6 km/l
  • Road ethanol consumption: 10.7 km/l
  • Fuel consumption on the road: 14.6 km/l

3. Driveability

The Fiat Cronos produced in Córdoba, Argentina, has pros and cons in this regard. The driving position and ergonomics are good, but the steering wheel is kind of disproportionate for a compact – even a sedan.

Made on the MP-S platform, it has dynamics suitable for a family car. The electrically assisted steering calls for corrections at higher speeds and the car behaves when cornering. But with that smoother set-up of the Italian brand’s vehicles.

4. Space and comfort

We are talking about a compact and even that the Cronos is discreetly more spacious than its direct rivals, such as Chevrolet Onix Plus and Hyundai HB20S. Just don’t get too excited.

Driver’s knee room and passenger is limited. The rear seat also doesn’t give you a lot of clearance and is best suited for two adults.

The cabin has improved with the adoption of darkened coatings in the 2026 line. In general, the finish is displeasing, not so much for the plastic itself, and more for the flaws in the fittings in the panel and in the seams of the ceiling covering. The acoustic insulation also leaves something to be desired at medium speeds.

5. What a trunk is this!

Cronos 2021 trunk has a capacity of 525 liters, which allows you to carry all passengers’ luggage without cramping

On the other hand, the Fiat Cronos offers the largest trunk in the category. There are 525 liters of volume, with a good opening span and enough depth to accommodate different types and sizes of luggage.

6. Equipment of the Fiat Cronos Precision

Here the Cronos line is doing badly. The list of equipment is trivial, reverse sensor, with air conditioning, trio, steering wheel height adjustment, tire pressure monitoring and USB sockets for the rear seat.

In safety, no driving assistance items. At least the top-of-the-line Precision version evaluated returned to having four airbags in the 2026 line – with the front side ones. The rest of the line continues only with the front bags required by law.

Also on the ride of the Fiat Cronos update, the multimedia center with a 7″ screen now allows wireless connection with smartphones. In the case of the Precision version, black leather upholstery, automatic air, twilight sensor and split rear backrests.

Externally, the most expensive option in the Cronos line features courtesy lights in the mirrors, chrome external door handles, 16″ diamond wheels and LED fog light. The headlight lights, by the way, gained a daytime running signature dotted with LEDs in the restyling.

7. Positioning and sales

The Fiat Cronos is sold in four versions:

  • Fiat Cronos Drive 1.0: BRL 109.990
  • Fiat Cronos Drive 1.3: BRL 114.990
  • Fiat Cronos Drive 1.3 AT: BRL 119.990
  • Fiat Cronos Precision 1.3 AT: BRL 125.990

In this way, Fiat’s three-hatchback positions itself more or less among its direct rivals. The Chevrolet Onix Plus goes from R$ 110.090 in options with a 1.0-liter aspirated engine to R$ 125.290, in turbo (115 hp) and with automatic transmission.

The Hyundai HB20S, whose days are numbered with the arrival of the i20, starts at R$ 110.090, also with 1.0 aspirated and manual gearbox, and reaches R$ 125.290 at the top of the line with turbo, AT transmission and 120 hp. That is, the two, in their more expensive versions, are more powerful than the Cronos.

There is also the Volkswagen Virtus, much more spacious than the trio and sold only in two configurations: R$ 114.390 and R$ 134.390. Always with a turbo engine of up to 116 hp and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Despite not having turbo versions, the sedan does not leave anything to be desired compared to competitors

No wonder the Cronos is the bottom in sales in the compact sedan category. From January to May 2026, the Fiat model registered 9,665 registrations.

The segment leader is the HB20S, with 17,349 (largely due to the aggressive offers on the sedan), followed by the Onix Plus, with 16,446. The Virtus is third, with 13,243 units delivered.
