Traffic violations in 2026: speeding leads with 19 million fines; check out the rest of the ranking

Speeding remains the most committed traffic violation in Brazil in 2026, maintaining an isolated lead across the country. This is what a survey by the Traffic Portal reveals, based on data from the National Registry of Traffic Violations (Renainf), linked to the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran).

The analysis lists the penalty notifications issued by the bodies of the National Traffic System (SNT) between January and May 2026. In the period, fines for speeding up to 50% above the allowed limit exceeded 19.1 million records, a number almost nine times higher than that of the second place in the ranking, the advance of the red light.

*The survey grouped the two most frequent speeding violations: up to 20% and between 20% and 50% above the maximum allowed speed.

No other conduct comes close to the volume generated by driving above the allowed limit. While speeding surpassed the mark of 19 million notifications in five months, the advance of the red light accumulated just over 2.2 million fines.

In the daily practice of Brazilian traffic, the speed numbers correspond to:

• Monthly average: more than 3.8 million penalty notifications;
• Daily average: about 126 thousand infractions recorded;
• Average per minute: approximately 88 fines issued per minute in the country.

Road safety experts point to speeding as one of the factors that most increase the risk and severity of collisions. The faster you are, the shorter your reaction time is, increasing the violence of the impact and the likelihood of deaths or serious injuries.

Driver Behavior Dominates Among the Biggest Infractions

An analysis of the most common notifications in Brazil and their possible causes shows that most infractions are directly associated with individual choices and driver behavior behind the wheel.

They are: speeding itself, running a red light, using a cell phone behind the wheel, lack of seat belts, neglect of essential passive protection equipment, non-compliance with traffic rules (improper use of exclusive bus lanes, irregular parking and non-compliance with time and place restrictions) and administrative issues.

The presence of the Fine for Non-Identification of the Offending Driver (NIC) in third place in the ranking usually generates doubts. This is because it is not applied directly to the driver on the road, but is an administrative penalty intended for legal entities (vehicle owners, such as business fleets, rental companies and carriers) that fail to indicate the driver responsible for the original infraction within the period set by the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB).
