Geely has just launched the EX5 EM-i, a plug-in hybrid that will be the automaker’s first model produced in Brazil, at the Ayrton Senna Industrial Complex, in São José dos Pinhais (PR).

After launching the EX2 and EX5 electric vehicles, the Chinese brand, which has teamed up with Renault to operate in the domestic market, brings a model focused on efficiency and comfort, in addition to a price that will scare competitors BYD Song Plus, Haval H6 and other medium SUVs that have a hybrid engine.

EX5 EM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a combined range of up to 1,300 km

Unlike the EX5 that Geely brought to Brazil last year, the model that gains the acronym EM-i (E-Motive intelligence) is hybrid, dubbed by the brand as “super hybrid”. This is because it is a plug-in model that can run in 100% electric mode, as well as work in hybrid mode with the combustion engine acting both as a generator and as a propeller to obtain greater performance.

Mechanical set, which has a 1.5 motor and electric motors, is combined with an 18.4 kWh or 29.8 kWh battery.

Built on the GEA platform, developed exclusively for electric and hybrid vehicles, the model offers a combined power of 262 hp and total torque of 38.7 kgfm, which allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds.

Its set consists of 160 kW electric motors, the main engines, as well as a 1.5-liter gasoline-powered combustion engine and a generator. Meanwhile, the LFP battery can be:

  • 18.4 kWh with charging from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes at 30 kW direct current (DC) or from 25% to 100% in 3 hours (AC) – PRO and MAX versions;
  • 29.8 kWh with charging from 30% to 80% in 16 minutes at 60 kW direct current (DC) or from 25% to 100% in 4.6 hours (AC) – ULTRA version.

This entire system gives the highest autonomy among hybrid medium SUVs.

Autonomy and consumption of the EX5 EM-i PRO and MAX (Inmetro):

  • 65 km in electric and combined mode of 1,245 km;
  • 14.6 km/l in the city and 13.3 km/l on the highway

Autonomy and consumption of the EX5 EM-i ULTRA (Inmetro):

  • 112 km in electric and combined mode of 1,300 km
  • 14.8 km/l in the city and 13.1 km/l on the highway

The model also has three driving modes (electric, hybrid or sport), front-wheel drive, McPherson/Multi-link independent suspension and ventilated/solid disc brakes.

Design and dimensions of the Geely hybrid

Visually, the model follows the automaker’s minimalist and modern DNA. Despite having the same name as the electric EX5, the hybrid vehicle brings its own elements with sculpted curved surfaces, a raised hood and a new light signature.

It has a central LED bar that connects to the headlights’ daytime running light signature (DRL), creating a continuous light strip in the design in the MAX and ULTRA versions. At the rear, the taillights follow the same design and are all LED with a three-dimensional effect.

The wheels are made of light alloy (18″ in the PRO version and 19″ inches in the MAX and ULTRA versions) and the EX5 EM-i has the following dimensions:

  • 4.74 meters long;
  • 1.90m wide;
  • 1.68m tall;
  • 2.75m wheelbase;
  • 17.2 cm tread height;
  • 428 L trunk capacity / 2,065 L with folded seats (VDA);
  • 60 L tank.

Comfort, technology and safety

Inside, Geely’s hybrid SUV shows great use of space with a large rear seat and good space to accommodate shoulders, knees and legs comfortably. The second row of seats still has air conditioning vents and USB-A and USB-C ports.

The model arrives with a raised cockpit-type center console, soft-touch coatings throughout the interior and a well-refined finish. The seats with a structure with cut-out foams are very soft, comfortable and have ventilation or heating, as well as position memory in the case of the driver, for the intermediate and top-of-the-line versions.

Unlike most Chinese, the model has physical buttons, both on the console and on the steering wheel, for the operation of the main commands, such as the activation of the panoramic sunroof, the air conditioning controls and others. This pleases many drivers who don’t like to have all the commands concentrated on the screens.

And speaking of screens, the EX5 EM-i has three: a fully digital 10.2-inch instrument cluster , a 15.4-inch central screen with ultra-thin bezels, and a 13.8-inch head-up display (HUD), the latter only for the MAX and ULTRA versions. The multimedia center has wireless connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems and intelligent voice assistant.

The sound system is FLYME Sound with 16 speakers, which offers four configurable sound field modes, in which audio can be directed to the entire vehicle, driver-centric, rear-seat-focused, or custom tuning.

In the list of equipment, the hybrid has an induction charger with 15 watts of power and a warning of forgetting the device for the two higher versions. The interior is available in dark blue for all versions and in a caramel tone for the EX5 EM-i ULTRA.

It is also possible to connect with the car through the app, which has services such as remote vehicle control and planning, status monitoring and online tracking and location. Updates can be made through the cloud via the Over-The-Air system.

Geely’s third model for the Brazilian market is equipped with 6 airbags (2 front, 2 front curtain and 2 rear curtain), descent and ascent control assistant, rear and front sensors, rain sensor, reversing camera and ADAS package, which is more reduced in the entry-level version, but very complete in the other two.

Features include: ACC, intelligent cruise control, traffic sign recognition, automatic emergency braking, front and rear collision mitigation system, blind spot detector, rear cross traffic alert, 540° panoramic camera and maintenance and lane change assistants.
