It is not new to see old cars appreciating. Finding well-preserved units of national classics does not happen often and many people who dreamed of having the model at the time now want to buy them out of nostalgia. Even so, a Chevrolet Opala advertised for almost R$ 1 million drew attention on social networks.

The market average for an original Opal SS exceeds R$ 100 thousand, with some rare color and year configurations reaching R$ 200 thousand. The car advertised for R$ 998.900 is an outlier.

For the old car driver Gustavo Brasil, the old car community was scared by this announcement. But he also pointed out that there are stores that do this to make themselves known. He does not know if it is worth the price because he does not know the amount invested in the project.

Gustavo Brasil is also a dealer of old cars and says that he values the original and well-preserved models more:

The car when it is a special series, rare, few units manufactured and maintains its absolute originality, it can reach values where the sky is the limit.

What is the Millionaire Opal like

The Chevrolet Opala SS advertised for almost R$ 1 million has many original elements to preserve the aesthetics of the time, but has preparation in the mechanics. The Lemans Blue paint, for example, is a shade that was only offered in 1971 and 1972, the steering wheel is also original.

The year 1972 was the first of the coupe body and the second of the SS sports model, which was sold as a sedan only in 1971. Details such as the stripes and emblems follow the original pattern.

The car begins to demonstrate the modifications with the 15-inch chrome wheels of the American Cragar. Behind them are Wilwood disc brakes, with striking red calipers.

The interior of the Opal has also been discreetly modified, with a black headliner and ODG digital panel that replicates the original model. The biggest changes are in the mechanics.

The 4.1-liter six-cylinder in-line engine received Fueltech programmable electronic injection, Manley valve head, Iasa pistons, Scat connecting rods, roller kit and multi-plate clutch. The gearbox is from five brands and works with a Dana locking differential.

The next cars to be valued

We are currently witnessing a growth in the values of cars from the 90s. The most notable thing about this is the first-generation Volkswagen Gol GTi, which can be found for up to R$ 500 thousand in rarer configurations and already has a restorer specialized in the model.

This cycle that the sports hatch is going through is similar to what happened with the national Dodges and the Ford Maverick a few decades ago. Those who were young at the time the car was new are now middle-aged and have the money to fulfill the dream that was previously unattainable.

We did a futurology exercise with Gustavo Brasil to try to find out which old cars will be the next to be valued. The specialist bets that they will be the sports cars of the late 90s and early 2000s.

He mentioned the Chevrolet Corssa GSI, the Astra GSI, the Fiat Marea Turbo and other cars of this generation. If you like any of these cars, you’d better run to get one before they appreciate it.
