Why the Jaecoo 7 “lost” 60 hp overnight without changing any parts

Omoda & Jaecoo has revised the official power and torque of the 2027 Jaecoo 7 line, which is now announced with 279 hp and 37 kgfm — compared to the 339 hp and 52 kgfm previously reported. The change, however, does not change the mechanical assembly or the performance of the plug-in hybrid SUV: what changes is only the way to calculate the combined power of the system.
The discreet change was pointed out by the magazine QUATRO RODAS. Until then, the manufacturer directly added the numbers of the 1.5 turbo gasoline engine, with 135 hp and 20,4 kgfm, to those of the two front electric motors, which together deliver 204 hp and 31,6 kgfm. With the update, the brand now follows the United Nations (UN) Global Technical Regulation No. 21, a standard that, according to the company, better reflects the real functioning of the set.

According to sources from the automaker heard by QUATRO RODAS, the previous methodology considered the peak performance of all engines simultaneously. International regulations, on the other hand, take into account that combustion and electric engines do not reach their maximum values at the same time during use.
The system, managed by a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), prioritizes electric driving and drives the gasoline engine as a battery generator or as a booster in acceleration. There are also natural mechanical losses in the transmission, which help explain the difference between the gross sum and the recalibrated number.
In practice, nothing changes for the driver: performance, consumption and autonomy remain the same. According to the brand, the SUV maintains the approximately 1,200 km of combined range and the 79 km driven only with electricity, in the Inmetro cycle.
Standardization was already adopted in other markets. In Europe, where the Jaecoo 7 was launched in 2024, the model has always been advertised with 279 hp. In the Philippines, the brand also had to review the vehicle’s communication after initially announcing higher numbers. In Brazil, the Omoda 7, which shares the same mechanical set, debuted following the international standard.
In addition to standardizing the technical specifications, the revision has a tax effect, and should reduce by 0.5 percentage points the Green IPI rate applied to the model, which expands the SUV’s marketing margin. The adjustment comes at a good commercial moment: from January to June 2026, Omoda & Jaecoo sold 16,805 units in the country, and the Jaecoo 7 broke a record of 2,731 registrations in June alone.
