New Geely EX5 appears in China with rear-wheel drive and front trunk

The first images of the new Geely EX5 with a ‘trunk’ under the hood came from China, which indicates the most relevant change of the electric SUV: the switch from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. The launch in the Chinese market of the new EX5 is scheduled for September 21.

The photos were published by an anonymous enthusiast and show the front compartment with an inscription that limits the load to 50 kg. The volume in liters was not disclosed — for comparison, the EX2, the brand’s smaller model, offers 70 liters in the same space. Front luggage racks have become a common item among Chinese electric manufacturers.

Rear-wheel drive and 115 hp more

The clue to the change in architecture appeared earlier, when the recharging port migrated from the front fender to the rear. In the homologation records, in which the car also appears as Geely Galaxy E5, the model features a single electric motor on the rear axle, with a maximum power of 333 hp.

The current generation delivers 218 hp, which represents a jump of 115 hp. The top speed rises from 175 km/h to 201 km/h. The battery remains of the LFP type, made of lithium iron phosphate, but the capacity has not yet been informed.

The SUV measures 4.64 m long, 1.92 m wide and 1.67 m high, with a wheelbase of 2.75 m. It is 2.1 cm longer and 1.9 cm wider than the in-line model, with no change in the wheelbase.

LiDAR on the roof and power

steering On the outside, the EX5 gains new bumpers, conventional door handles and a LiDAR sensor installed on the roof. The equipment indicates the presence of the G-ASD G-Pilot H5 package, a driving assistance system capable of operating the NOA function — assisted navigation — both on highways and on urban roads. There are also cameras on the front fenders and one integrated into the rear spoiler.

According to Shan Aifu, responsible for communication at the Geely Galaxy division, the external design has changed little, but the structure, internal components and electronic systems have undergone a complete overhaul.

The renewal comes at a delicate time. From January to August 2026, the EX5 sold 40,776 units in China, down 45.9% from the same period a year earlier, according to China EV DataTracker.

In Brazil, the EX5 is the model that marked Geely’s return in 2025, in an operation supported by the partnership with Renault. Here, it is sold in the Pro versions, at R$ 205.800, and Max, at R$ 225.800, with a front motor of 218 hp and 32,6 kgfm and a 60,2 kWh battery.

The manufacturer has not yet informed when the renewed version arrives in the country.
