Most powerful Ford Mustang convertible in history has 806 hp; see what changes

Ford unveiled the Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible, which arrives as a 2027 model with 806 hp and the title of the most powerful open-top Mustang ever made by the brand. It is also the first high-performance convertible in the line since 2013. Orders open in the autumn, between September and December, and deliveries begin in spring 2027, starting in March. The price was not disclosed.

The model is part of the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of Ford Racing, a division that also signed the Dark Horse SC coupe, presented in January. Under the hood is the same supercharged V8 Predator 5.2, with 806 hp and 91,2 kgfm, associated with a seven-speed dual-clutch Tremec transmission and rear-wheel drive.

“If the coupe is the race-race side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street appeal part of the formula,” said Mark Rushbrook, Ford Racing global director.

Magnesium reinforcement and aerodynamic touches

The starting point was the structure of the 5.0-liter Mustang GT convertible, to which engineers added a magnesium bar connecting the suspension towers from one side of the engine bay to the other, to handle the efforts of 806 hp in a body without a hard roof. The new generation MagneRide suspension received specific calibration, focused on the street and not on lap time.

“Instead of prioritizing the convertible to set lap times, we designed it to be the ultimate open-top grand touring machine,” said Arie Groeneveld, the program’s chief engineer.

The soft top also forced adjustments in aerodynamics. As the profile of the canvas roof differs from the rigid one, the engineers extended the flap of the hood air extractor, closing part of the open area. The rear spoiler maintains the coupe’s design and angle of attack, but gained exclusive supports for the trunk lid and lost the vertical flaps at the ends.

The purple that changes color

Among the aesthetic novelties is the color Precision Purple Metallic, which changes the tone according to the incidence of light, although without the extreme effect of the old Mystic and Mystichrome paints offered in Cobra versions. The brake calipers gain an exclusive color and the interior can be configured in Black Onyx or Space Gray, with carbon fiber applications. The soft top is activated by a button.

The rest of the visual package repeats that of the coupe, with enlarged air intakes, flared fenders, side skirts and rectangular exhaust outlets. Ford said it will produce according to demand, without a fixed number of units.
