Mercedes-AMG has presented the new G 63 Mirage Edition, an exclusive version of its most iconic SUV limited to just 35 units and tailor-made for the Middle East. The great attraction is the painting, which changes shade according to the incidence of light, the angle of vision and movement – and the series will not be sold in the United States or Europe. The choice reinforces the region’s appetite for high-end luxury SUVs and custom editions, in a market where models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser are among the most desired.

The name refers to mirage, an optical illusion caused by the distortion of light over layers of air at different temperatures, which makes distant objects look like water until they fall apart on approach. The paint, named Verde Silver Magno, came out of the Manufaktur Made to Measure made-to-measure customisation programme – the brand’s customisation line, in the spirit of Ferrari’s Tailor Made. According to Mercedes, in the desert “sometimes a mirage can come true”. As it is a work on demand, each of the 35 units is practically unique.

In addition to the bodywork, the Mirage Edition is distinguished by the 22-inch forged AMG wheels in Tech Gold, the Platinum White upholstery, an internal handle with the name of the edition and an insert with the inscription “1 of 35” on the spare tire cover. Without relevant mechanical changes, the SUV should keep the 4.0 twin-turbo V8 from the AMG line — in its current configuration, with about 585 hp and 86,7 kgfm of torque, enough to go from 0 to 100 km/h in around 4,5 seconds —, an engine from the same family that equips the Aston Martin DB12. With no major news under the skin, it is the rarity — reinforced by the bespoke finishes — that should make the series coveted by collectors.

What may arrive in the United States, in place of the Mirage, is the so-called “baby G-Class”, a smaller version of the utility scheduled for 2027. Initially considered as 100% electric, the model may also gain a combustion option, according to recent reports, at the request of American dealers. A convertible variant of the AMG G 63 is also expected there in 2028. Even without the exclusivity of the Mirage, the G 63 is already expensive: in the United States, it starts at US$ 195,5 thousand (about R$ 1 million), which suggests that the limited edition will cost much more for the few customers of one of the biggest status symbols in the automotive market.
