Land Rover postpones new generation of electric Defender to the next decade

Land Rover has postponed the launch of the next generation of the Defender by at least two years, which is expected to include an all-electric version. According to the British newspaper The Times, the delay is mainly related to the need to reduce costs amid the brand’s investments in the development of new models.

With the postponement, an eventual electric Defender is not expected to hit the market until the beginning of the next decade. Meanwhile, Land Rover intends to focus its efforts on other battery-powered models.

Electric Range Rover is a priority

By the end of the year, the brand plans to launch at least two new electric vehicles, and among them is the electric Range Rover Sport, which has already had the first prototypes revealed and is expected to become the most powerful and fastest version of the family. Another planned launch is the Range Rover GT, a model that will be fully electric and will have greater passenger capacity within the Range Rover line.

The new vehicles will be developed on the EMA platform, initially created for exclusively electric models. However, Land Rover revised its plans and also started to consider hybrid systems for the new architecture.

The compact version of the Defender, which is also under development on the EMA platform, should follow this strategy and be offered with different engine options.
