Honda will end sales of the Prologue in the United States after the conclusion of the 2026 model year, in a move that leaves the brand without any 100% electric vehicles in the world’s largest market — at least for now. With the end of the SUV, the automaker retreats from a segment in which it had bet billions of dollars.

Launched as a transition solution while Honda developed its own electric technology, the Prologue was born out of a partnership with General Motors, struck at a time when the Japanese automaker had pledged to invest billions of dollars in electrification. In practice, it and the Acura ZDX were restyled versions of the Chevrolet Blazer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq, built on GM’s Ultium platform. The duo, however, had a cold reception in the market: while the Prologue did well, the ZDX sold little and was retired in 2025.

The numbers help explain the decision. In 2025, Prologue sales even grew 19.1% to 39,194 units, a performance driven by consumers’ race to secure the federal tax credit before its extinction. As soon as the incentive was withdrawn, demand collapsed: in December, there were only 932 registrations, a drop of 88.6%. The fall continued in 2026 — in the first half of the year, Honda sold 8,407 electric vehicles, a decrease of 48.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, equivalent to about 1,400 units per month.

The slow pace made the Prologue Honda’s second least sold vehicle in the country, behind only the Prelude. Sales were so low that the electric SUV was eventually surpassed by all Acura models still in production, including the RDX, which is also on its way to being discontinued.

The decision adds to a broader restructuring of the company in the field of electrification. The Acura ZDX had already been discontinued in 2025, and since then Honda has also canceled the projects of the so-called 0 Series (the 0 Sedan and the 0 SUV), the Acura RSX and even Sony Honda Mobility, an electric car brand created in partnership with Sony and responsible for the Afeela.

In a statement, Honda said that current Prologue owners will continue to receive full support through the dealer network, which includes service, parts and warranty coverage. The closure marks, for now, the end of the brand’s presence in the pure electric market in the US, at a time when the American consumer continues to show a preference for hybrid models. The company, however, has not abandoned electrification once and for all and keeps its own electric architecture under development for the coming years.
