Glass roof with solar charger goes into production in China
Chinese supplier announces glass roof with integrated solar cells ready for large-scale manufacturing, but the gains in autonomy are modest

The quest for greater autonomy continues to drive technological innovations in the global electrified vehicle sector. Recently, Fuyao Group, which is a supplier to giants such as Ford, General Motors, Tesla, and the Volkswagen Group, announced that it has completed the development and validation of a glass sunroof ready for mass production. The technology consists of laminating solar cells directly onto the body of the automotive glass, covering the entire top panel and extending over a wide section of the rear glass.
International press reports indicate that this technology may be integrated into BYD models in China as an optional item, with an estimated price of approximately US$1,190, although none of the companies involved have issued an official confirmation about this alleged commercial partnership. The supplier’s manufacturing infrastructure is already expanding in its industrial plants, awaiting the definitive adhesion of the automotive market.
Fuyao, however, is far from the only one interested in this market. Nissan engineers also developed and tested a prototype based on the Ariya electric SUV, equipped with solar panels strategically distributed across the roof, hood and trunk lid. According to the Japanese manufacturer, under clear skies and favorable weather conditions, the system can accumulate enough energy to add about 23 kilometers of autonomy per day. When the vehicle is in transit, these gains drop considerably due to the shadow factor and movement.
Although the volume of energy generated is modest, analyses indicate that drivers with moderate use could reduce recharges. It is important to emphasize that this is a resource aimed at optimizing daily efficiency, and not a miracle solution.
