Autonomous plane crosses the US alone for 5,148 km in an unprecedented crossing in aviation

A Cessna Caravan adapted by Joby Aviation crossed the United States from coast to coast without anyone touching the controls. The aircraft traveled 5,148 km, or 3,199 miles, in a succession of fully computer-controlled flights — the first fully autonomous transcontinental crossing ever completed in the country, according to the company. The distance exceeds the 4,394 km that separate the extreme northern and southern points of Brazil.
Named J208, the aircraft departed from Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, California, and ended the leg eastbound at Dare County Regional Airport in Outer Banks, North Carolina. Before landing, it made a low pass over the First Flight Monument in Kitty Hawk, where the Wright brothers made the first powered flight in history in 1903. The route was part of the Electric Skies 2026 tour, which the company has been running for about a month.
There was a pilot on board — but he did nothing
The system performed all the steps of the operation on its own: taxiing on the runway, takeoff, en route navigation, cruising and landing. A safety pilot traveled in the cockpit throughout the journey, as required by this type of demonstration, but did not give a single command to the aircraft, Joby said.
The supervision was in charge of ground operators, distributed between the company’s autonomy center, in California, and the Shaw Air Force Base, in South Carolina. They followed the flight within 3,739 km of the aircraft, without manually controlling it.
Among the stops was Phoenix Deer Valley airport, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States, where the Cessna mixed with real traffic without any prior familiarity with the airfield. On the route, the system also dodged severe storms in real time. Other points on the route were Fort Worth, Texas, and the Shaw base itself.
Cargo, relief and military
use” This journey across the United States offers a glimpse into a new era of aviation,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby. According to him, autonomy can connect remote communities, deliver critical supplies, accelerate disaster responses, support military operations and get pilots out of risky situations.
The technology was purchased from Xwing in 2024 and accumulates more than 400 flights and 800 hours of automated operation in controlled and uncontrolled airspaces. It has also undergone three exercises by the US Armed Forces.
At the Air Force’s Agile Flag, it delivered spare parts 24 hours earlier than conventional logistics would take. At REFORPAC, aircraft in Hawaii were operated remotely from Guam, about 6,400 km away.
Joby’s strategy is to install the system in already certified airframes, such as the Caravan, rather than waiting for the homologation of an entirely new plane. The J208 now begins its journey back west, with stops planned in Raleigh, Washington, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City and Portland.
