French pickup was announced at the end of 2023, and adopted the name of the concept model to replace the unimpressive Oroch
Without Carlo Ancelotti, Neymar or Canarinho Pistola, Renault entered the presentation of Volkswagen’s main novelty. The French company confirmed that Niagara will be the name of the brand’s new intermediate pickup for Latin America. The model, anticipated by a concept presented in 2023, will be produced in Córdoba, Argentina, and officially debut scheduled for September 10, 2026. The novelty is part of the “futuREady” strategic plan, which foresees new global launches aimed at markets outside Europe.

The presentation of Niagara takes place on the same day as the first public appearance of Volkswagen Tukan, its future direct competitor. Volkswagen unveiled the pickup during the Brazilian National Team’s call-up event for the 2026 World Cup, still under heavy camouflage. Like Renault, the German brand is betting on a monocoque pickup to face Fiat Toro, Chevrolet Montana and Ram Rampage in one of the most profitable segments of the Brazilian market.

Despite having similar proposals, the two manufacturers adopt different strategies. Renault wants to position Niagara on a more sophisticated and technological level, betting on E-Tech hybrid versions and even configurations with electrified all-wheel drive. The pickup will use the RGMP platform, the same modular base as the new Kardian and Boreal.
Volkswagen, on the other hand, prepares the Tukan with a focus on cost-benefit, comfort and drivability close to that of SUVs. The model will use the MQB-A0 architecture, derived from the T-Cross, and should debut the brand’s 48-volt mild hybrid system in Brazil, combined with the new 1.5 TSI engine. Production will be in São José dos Pinhais (PR), while Niagara will be concentrated in Argentina.
The simultaneous movement of Renault and Volkswagen shows a new phase of the intermediate pickup segment in Latin America. After years of almost absolute dominance by Fiat Toro, manufacturers are now accelerating projects that combine electrification, greater embedded technology and urban proposal, expanding the dispute in a market that should gain new competitors in the coming years. Toyota is working on the Corolla Cross variant, and BYD announced Mako. And of course, Fiat, it won’t take long to completely renew its winning pickup.
