The iPhone Duo was unveiled with its unprecedented foldable screen (within the Apple line), but what draws attention is its price for the Brazilian market, which puts the cell phone in a stratospheric range. The version with 2 TB of storage costs R$ 30.999, while the entry-level configuration starts at R$ 21.999. The most expensive version, therefore, already touches the price of several used cars in the Brazilian market. And we’re not talking about scrap metal falling apart.

The Fiat Palio Economy 1.0 2014 appears at Fipe for R$ 28.010. It is one of the models that comes closest to the value of the iPhone Duo without exceeding budget.

The compact uses a 1.0 engine and has a wide range of parts and services in the independent market. The version found in this range, however, is simpler and has accumulated more than a decade since manufacture. But it has the guarantee that it is equipped with dual airbags and ABS brakes, mandatory from 2014.

This Palio is a rational option for those who need a means of transport and don’t want to see ads on the double screen while waiting for the drive.

2. Fiat Uno Vivace 1.0 2014 – R$ 30.959

The five-door Uno Vivace 1.0 2014 has a reference price of R$ 30.959. That is, it is only R$ 40 below the value of the 2 TB iPhone Duo.

It is one of the most direct comparisons between car and cell phone. The money needed to buy the used version of the Uno is practically the same as the money needed to carry Apple’s foldable smartphone.

An account in favor of the Italian is the fact that the Uno has a slow depreciation, unlike a cell phone, even if it is a coveted iPhone.

3. Renault Sandero Authentique 1.0 2014 – BRL 30.748

The Sandero Authentique 1.0 2014 appears for R$ 30.748. The hatch is characterized by the interior space superior to that of some compact competitors of the time and a trunk of 320 liters.

In this case, the R$ 30.999 of the iPhone would be enough to buy the car and there would still be R$ 251 left to change the oil.

The excellent internal space counts in favor of the Frenchman, which takes five adults with ease. An advantage that not even with 10 TB, the iPhone Duo would do better.

4. Volkswagen Gol City 1.0 2012 – BRL 25.135

GOL CITY IPHONE DUO

The Volkswagen Gol continues to appear among the low-cost alternatives in the used market and still as a transaction leader. The Gol City 1.0 2012 has a reference price of R$ 25.135.

With the difference of almost R$ 5.900 for the price of the iPhone Duo, the buyer would have some room for initial expenses, although a mechanical inspection is necessary before purchasing any used car of this age.

You can change the belt, battery, clutch, oil and still have the money left over for a new phone.

5. Ford Ka 1.0 2013 – R$ 26.731

The Ford Ka 1.0 2013 appears for R$ 26.731 at Fipe. It is another compact that easily enters the cell phone budget.

Despite having only two doors, the second-generation “Kazinho” is an interesting option for being compact, economical and equipped with a Zetec Rocam 1.0 engine (with timing chain), much more reliable than its successor with an oil-bathed belt.

Sometimes it’s not the size that matters, but the reliability. Here’s the tip.

6. Renault Clio Authentique 1.0 2014 – BRL 23.751

RENAULT CLIO 2013
Despite being retired for years, the Clio is still a car that should not be despised (Photo: Renault | Disclosure)

The Renault Clio Authentique 1.0 2014 has a reference value of R$ 23.751. It is one of the cheapest options on the list and leaves more than R$ 7.000 difference compared to the 2 TB iPhone Duo.

Simple mechanics and low weight are characteristics of the model, but age requires special attention to suspension, cooling system, clutch and maintenance history. Certainly a part of the change should be destined for maintenance.

7. Peugeot 207 XR 1.4 2013 – BRL 23.518

Malagrine

The Peugeot 207 XR 1.4 2013 appears for R$ 23.518. It is the cheapest model in the selection based on the reference table. In this case, it may be more business to spend R$ 31 thousand on the cell phone than to embark on this French warhead.

The car offers a 1.4 engine and a five-door body, which stands out as an advantage. But the 207 is a car famous for its fragile suspension, frequent cooling problems, as well as electrical failures and other torments.

Go from iPhone!

8. Fiat Palio Celebration 1.0 2014 – BRL 31.966

Another possibility is the Palio Celebration 1.0 2014, priced at R$ 31.966. In this case, the car exceeds the price of the iPhone Duo by just under R$ 1.000.

The version uses a Fire engine and has four doors. It is an example of how small differences in version and configuration can greatly change the price of the same model in the used market.

Right away, it draws attention for offering dual airbags and brakes with ABS, in addition to being able to find units with air conditioning, electric windows and power steering.

9. Volkswagen Gol Black 1.0 2012 – R$ 28.079

Gol Black 1.0 2012 has a reference value of R$ 28.079. The special version adds specific equipment and finishing in relation to the most basic configurations of the compact.

Even though it costs less than the iPhone Duo, it remains a vehicle with about 14 years of use in 2026. Then, it is necessary to allocate the “change” for that change of belt, fluids and clutch.

10. Fiat Uno Vivace Celebration 1.0 2014 – BRL 30.890

With the price of the iPhone Duo it is possible to take a cool stroller, like the Uno Vivace (Photo: Fiat | Disclosure)

The Uno Vivace Celebration 1.0 2014 appears for R$ 30.890. The difference to the iPhone Duo is only R$ 109.

The model represents one of the closest cases to the comparison. The consumer would practically have to choose between a R$ 31 foldable cell phone and a 12-year-old used compact hatch.

Certainly those who buy an iPhone Duo will not allocate their doubloons to a car with more than 10 years of use. But the steep price opens up a reflection on the value of money. Would you sell your used cart to buy a cell phone?
