At the end of 2025, the process of obtaining the National Driver’s License (CNH) underwent drastic changes, which include the end of the mandatory driving schools and the institution of the CNH do Brasil application as a central platform. Through the app it is possible to carry out and monitor various stages of the license, however, those who have had their CNH revoked need to pay attention to some important particularities.

Drivers who have been subject to revocation of their driver’s license are required to qualify again, which includes retaking the theoretical course. However, according to the State Traffic Department of Rio Grande do Sul (Detran-RS), drivers in the process of rehabilitation will not be able to complete this step through the material available in the CNH do Brasil app.

This is because the platform on which the free online theoretical course is available was developed exclusively for first-time license cases. Therefore, the driver who has his CNH revoked and wants to rehabilitate must, mandatorily, carry out the theoretical steps through an accredited Driver Training Center (CFC) or distance learning modalities (EAD) approved by the state agency.

Difference between revoked CNH and suspended license

The revocation of the CNH is the most severe penalty in the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). It has very striking differences from the suspension:

  • Suspension: the driver is temporarily prevented from driving, meets the deadline and takes only one refresher course.
  • Revocation: the driver permanently loses the document (usually for driving suspended or reoffending in very serious infractions). He must wait for the legal period of two years to then restart the entire qualification process from scratch.

Step by step to regularize the revoked CNH

To return to driving after serving the two-year penalty, the driver needs to complete steps similar to those of a beginner driver, following the guidelines of the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran):

  1. Opening of the process: attend an accredited CFC in person to request the rehabilitation service.
  2. Medical and psychological examinations: carry out the physical and mental fitness assessment, in addition to the psychological examination.
  3. Theoretical-technical course: fulfill the workload of theoretical classes directly at the CFC or in distance learning systems integrated with Detran-RS (the use of unauthorized applications will generate a waste of time and money).
  4. Theoretical Test: Approval in the official exam on legislation, defensive driving and first aid.
  5. Practical Driving Test: Practical beacon test and street course.

For those who are rehabilitating, practical classes at the CFC are optional, but the final practical exam is mandatory. In addition, in order to avoid financial losses and inconvenience with courses without legal validity, always consult the DMV before starting any procedure.

It is also important to remember that while the CTB regulates the general standards nationally, operating procedures may vary. Drivers from other states should consult the specific rules of the DMV of their respective federative unit.
