Volvo EX30 becomes ‘giant powerbank’ with update made to the multimedia center

Volvo started distributing this week a remote update that turns the EX30 into a socket on wheels. The over-the-air package enables the V2L (vehicle-to-load) function in the compact electric SUV, allowing you to use the energy stored in the battery to power external equipment — and Latin America, with Brazil included, is among the regions covered.

The feature arrives at no additional cost to both new units and cars already delivered: the EX30 has always had the necessary hardware for bidirectional recharging, only the software to release it was missing.

According to Volvo Cars, the system delivers up to 3 kW at 16 amps. In practice, it is enough power to keep a refrigerator, notebook, router, lighting, power tools or a coffee maker running — not an electric shower. To preserve the vehicle’s range, the supply is automatically interrupted when the battery charge drops below 20%.

Access, however, is not immediate. It is necessary to connect an adapter to the EX30’s charging port and then connect the equipment to the output available in the accessory, sold separately. Volvo did not disclose the price or availability of the adapter in Brazil.

CCS2 standard defines who receives

it Availability varies by market and depends on the charging connector. V2L will be offered in the EMEA, APAC and Latin America regions, all with the CCS2 standard — the same adopted in Brazil. The EX30 sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan are left out, whose owners only receive interface improvements.

The exclusion from the American market has a commercial explanation: Volvo has already announced that it will stop selling the EX30 in the country after the 2026 model year, making room for entry-level rivals such as the Kia EV3, which brings V2L as standard.

Redesigned interface and Plug & Charge

In addition to the power supply function, the update changes the on-board experience, with a customizable contextual bar and a redesigned settings menu. In certain European markets, the package also unlocks Plug & Charge, a feature that does not require a physical card or app and performs authentication and charging of public recharge automatically after connecting the cable. This functionality, unlike V2L, is restricted to model year 2026 or newer.

Volvo says that the EX30 is one of the first models in the compact premium segment to offer bidirectional charging. The same capacity is already available in the EX60, the largest electric SUV in the lineup, and the brand promises to extend it to other models.
