Woman took her daughter out of her car seconds before a runaway Mercedes invaded the sidewalk and destroyed the vehicle in Greece
A 39-year-old mother avoided tragedy by pulling her daughter out of a car seconds before a runaway Mercedes-Benz hit the vehicle on the morning of June 3 in Nafpaktos, a coastal city in western Greece. The case, recorded by security cameras from nearby establishments, ended without injuries.
The images show the woman arriving at her red Volkswagen Polo and removing her daughter from the car seat in the back seat. She had stopped to buy something at the bakery and, when she returned, the girl asked to get out of the car. When the two were heading to the front of the vehicle, the mother hears the engine of a car accelerating towards her, takes the child in her arms and runs to the nearby stores, getting rid of danger by a matter of centimeters.

A few moments later, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126 driven by a 75-year-old man invades the wrong way, hits parked motorcycles and collides violently with the Polo. The sedan even scraped the side of a Peugeot 3008 and narrowly missed another Volkswagen Polo.
In addition to the mother and child, a pedestrian also had to run to escape the wreckage. Despite the severity of the accident, no one was injured. “Thank God she wanted to leave. If he had remained in the back seat, he would have died,” the mother told local media.
When residents approached to question him, the elderly man seemed oblivious to what had happened. In a statement, he said he did not know what caused the loss of control and raised the hypothesis that the accelerator had locked. He also said that he did not have time to brake and that he did not even turn the steering wheel.
The Greek authorities confirmed that the alcohol test was negative. The man is facing charges related to reckless driving, had his license suspended immediately and will undergo evaluation by the Greek Ministry of Transport, which will determine whether he can drive again.
