Electrification doesn’t mean the end of the fun for Range Rover fans. During a private event at the popular Goodwood Festival of Speed, in England, last weekend, Land Rover presented the first prototypes of the Range Rover Sport Electric, the unprecedented 100% battery-powered version of the sports SUV. And, to prove that the change of propulsion did not soften the model, the brand set out for a demonstration worthy of cinema: one of the prototypes was removed from inside the fuselage of an airplane, another climbed a flight of stairs and a third was released on the runway.
The intended message with the staging is clear: the electric one can handle the same challenges that the combustion brothers face effortlessly — and these are still in the catalog. Land Rover has confirmed that the Range Rover Sport range will continue to offer six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, the V8 petrol with mild hybrid system and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions – the same variety of options as the current generation. That is, those who still prefer the roar of a combustion engine will not be orphaned.
The full technical sheet should only be revealed later in 2026, probably along with the facelift of the line — whose camouflaged prototypes have already been spotted on the Nürburgring circuit, with new bumpers and retouched headlights. For now, the automaker has not revealed the power of the electric set, but the expectation is that it will mirror the system of its bigger brother, the Range Rover Electric: two motors (one per axle), all-wheel drive and about 550 hp — more than many twin-turbo V8s deliver.
According to Land Rover, the SUV brings together a package of technologies that expands power and torque, reinforced by a new chassis set-up and a synthesized sound that, the brand promises, makes the experience behind the wheel as striking as it is engaging, on any type of surface. Martin Limpert, general director of Range Rover, went further and said that electric will redefine the performance SUV segment when it hits stores later this year.
The prototypes shown at Goodwood still used the body of the current Range Rover Sport, on sale since 2022, differentiated only by new alloy wheels and courtesy lights (the projections on the ground when opening the doors) specific to the electric version. Land Rover itself admits that the production version should arrive with a different design from the one presented — and, inside, the mid-life update also promises new technology in the cabin.
