After 16 years without a deep renovation, Nissan has relaunched in Japan the fourth generation of Elgrand, the minivan that helped create the country’s premium segment and that now returns completely redesigned and electrified to face the dominance of Toyota Alphard. Presented in Yokohama and already available at Japanese dealerships, the model abandons conventional combustion engines once and for all and has accumulated more than 6 thousand orders since the end of May — of which more than 5 thousand came from retail customers.

The launch is treated internally as a key piece for the recovery of the brand. According to data from Nikkei Asia cited by the trade press, Nissan sold only 1,163 units of the previous generation Elgrand in Japan in fiscal 2025, while Toyota sold 81,357 Alphard in the same period — a chasm that the automaker wants to start narrowing.

Under the hood, Nissan debuts the third generation of the e-Power system. In practice, a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine acts exclusively as an energy generator, while traction is in charge of electric motors. The set is complemented by the e-4orce all-wheel drive system, which helps to reduce body roll and maintain stability. The total power has not yet been confirmed, but, according to the manufacturer, the system delivers more than 51 kgfm of torque.

The automaker has also adopted the Intelligent Dynamic Suspension, which monitors the floor ahead and adjusts the response of the shock absorbers in real time — a feature designed to please especially those traveling in the back seat, with a driver.

Inspired by the 2023 Hyper Tourer concept and the design language that Nissan has dubbed “timeless Japanese futurism”, the Elgrand sports a bold front grille and daytime running lights that are more reminiscent of a show car than a production car, moving away from the dated look of the previous generation.

Inside, the focus is on the passenger. The second row receives “Zero Gravity” captain’s seats, which, in the top-of-the-line configuration, bring legrest and backrest with double recline, allowing you to raise the upper body while watching the rear screens. The audio is provided by a Bose system with 22 speakers. On the dashboard, two 14.3″ screens are integrated with a wood finish, and 64-color ambient lighting runs through the doors.

Nissan also lengthened the cabin, enlarged the sliding door windows and staggered the seats in the three rows to improve visibility for all occupants. Among the practical details are side steps with easy access, a function of partial opening of the sliding door and a trunk capable of swallowing seven suitcases even with the seven seats occupied.

With a starting price of 6.87 million yen — about R$ 216 thousand (approximately US$ 42.3 thousand) at the current exchange rate — the new Elgrand arrives first in the Japanese domestic market. Nissan says it intends to sell it in other countries as well, but has not yet released prices outside Japan. In the United States, however, the minivan is discarded: the brand abandoned the segment in the country when the Quest stopped being sold in 2017, ceding the land to Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.
