Between very rare Formula 1 cars and super sports cars valued in millions, the one who stole the show at the 2026 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed did not leave any factory: it was Lightning McQueen. The central character of Pixar’s “Cars” franchise faced the legendary hill climb of the English event and transformed the track into a meeting point for generations of motorsport lovers.

Considered one of the most prestigious automotive gatherings in the world, the festival takes place every year on the estate of the 13th Duke of Richmond, in the south of England, and brings together some of the rarest, oldest and noisiest machines on the planet. The highlight is the traditional timed climb up the hill, a narrow and winding route where cars from different eras face the clock. This time, however, it was the number 95 who drew smiles when he appeared lined up at the starting line, side by side with real race cars.

The participation, it is true, had a purely symbolic character. McQueen did not compete in an official time on the climb – his presence was aimed at entertainment, without any pretense of being among the records of the race. Still, the scene divided opinions: if part of the more traditional public turned up their noses at a fictional character in the midst of motor sports icons, most surrendered to the playful side of the tribute, which reinforces how much motorsport also fits into the entertainment imaginary.

The appearance serves as a reminder of the cultural impact of the original film, released in 2006. More than a children’s animation, “Cars” helped to bring the general public — especially the younger ones — closer to the racing universe, with careful references to motor sports and a cast of strong voices. The production even had a special appearance by Michael Schumacher, then seven-time Formula 1 champion, who voiced a Ferrari F430 inspired by himself in a scene at the end of the film. The public’s affection for the work helps explain why, almost two decades later, the character still arouses so much reaction when he appears on a stage as serious as Goodwood’s.

Anyone who wants to check out the moment can follow the record on the festival’s official networks. On the same climb, McQueen shared the asphalt with real motorsport stars, such as the young Italian talent Kimi Antonelli, at the wheel of a Mercedes. Without the weight of the stopwatches, the passage of the character ended up marking the recent history of the event, by uniting admirers who grew up following his adventures and who were able to see, up close, the unmistakable “Catchau”.
