The National Congress has strengthened access control to the cloakroom, the main gateway to the complex for parliamentarians and authorities, due to the fear of attacks – among the hypotheses raised internally, that of a car bomb. The information is from the PlatôBR website. The Legislative Police began to restrict the circulation of vehicles on the lane that descends to the site, freeing the passage only for official and authority cars.

With the new rule, visitors and journalists need to disembark before the access point and continue the rest of the route on foot. App vehicles are also no longer allowed to carry out departures and arrivals in the area. Tourists, when they can, limit themselves to photographing the lawn in front of the building.

The measure was adopted by the leadership of Congress amid concern about the vulnerability of one of the areas of greatest circulation of the legislative complex. Privately, a deputy member of the Board of Directors summed up the fear behind the decision: “Imagine if a car bomb explodes there in front of the cloakroom?”

In practice, part of the route that was previously made by car to the door now ends a few meters earlier, and those who do not have the prerogative need to complete it on foot. The measure mainly affects the press that follows the daily life of the Houses and the visitors who circulate through the complex.

Members of the Board of Directors assess that the stricter control reduces gaps around the main building, a point considered sensitive because it is the closest entrance to the plenary and the offices. Until now, the restriction had been guaranteed only by the presence of the Legislative Police on the road, without physical barriers capable of preventing vehicles from approaching.

It is precisely this gap that is at the center of conversations about how to protect the region. As part of the discussions on strengthening security, the leadership is studying the installation of gates to further restrict car access to the cloakroom.
