This time is also marked by the end of the year holidays and vacations, so countless drivers decide to hit the road with their vehicle.

But that’s where the doubts arise: can I travel by car without having paid the IPVA 2026? Does not paying the tax result in a fine? To understand this, it is first necessary to understand how the tax works and why it is mandatory to pay it every year.

What is the IPVA and how does it work

The IPVA is one of the main annual expenses for Brazilians who own a car, and it can vary greatly depending on several factors, such as location, rates, exemptions and the market value of the vehicle.

This is the tax related to the ownership of a vehicle and its collection is the responsibility of the state where the car is registered. Therefore, payment dates, tax rate amounts, and exemptions depend on where you live.

Can not paying the IPVA 2026 result in a fine?

Contrary to what many people think, failing to pay the IPVA does not give you a fine directly, but if you do not pay, you will eventually be fined. This is because, in order to issue the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate (CRLV), a mandatory carrying document, it is necessary to pay the tax.

If you do not make the payment, you will be prevented from renewing the licensing. In this way, without the license up to date, then the driver is committing a traffic violation and can be punished with a fine. This is provided for in the fifth item of article 230 of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB):

Art. 230 – Driving the vehicle: V – that is not registered and duly licensed”;

  • Infraction – very serious (7 points);
  • Penalty – fine (R$ 293.47) and seizure of the vehicle;
  • Administrative measure – removal of the vehicle;

Despite this, you who have not yet paid the IPVA 2026 and plan to travel by car or motorcycle in January, most likely do not need to worry, as the updated licensing should not be requested in January or February.

This is because in several states the payment schedules are extensive due to the option to pay the amount in installments, with some installments arriving by the end of 2026. In this way, inspections will also be late, so if you are stopped by any authority and have the CRLV 2025 you can rest assured.

But, even so, it is important to check the calendar of each state and check when the inspections begin. It is also worth remembering that the delay in the tax generates interest, so don’t forget to pay it.

How to calculate the IPVA value

In addition to knowing which payment method is best for you, it is also important to know where the tax amount comes from and how to calculate it. The basis of the IPVA account considers the vehicle’s market value and the state tax rate.

The formula to know how much this tax costs is:

  • market value of the vehicle x rate charged in each state = IPVA

In short, the market value is the market value of your vehicle, which is usually based on the quotation of the Foundation Institute for Economic Research, the famous Fipe Table. The rate is defined by each state according to the type of vehicle.

Example: consider the tax of someone who lives in São Paulo, where the current rate is 4% for passenger cars. Suppose that this driver has just bought a vehicle whose market value is R$ 50,000.00. To calculate the IPVA, he must do the following calculation:

  • 50,000 X 4% = IPVA -> 50,000 X 0.04 = R$ 2,000

How to pay the IPVA?

There are several ways to pay the IPVA. The most direct is with your state, through the Detran website or the State Department of Finance (Sefaz). Some banks also facilitate payment, just by entering the Renavan number in the app or website.

Payment methods usually range from boletos to Pix, with options for installments in various installments or payment in cash, often with a discount.
